Carb too big?

I have a 750 edelbrock carb and was wondering how much would it effect my stock 400? I was told it would make the truck run rich

i love hearing this stuff! you can tune the EB 750 to run lean if you want to. the characteristic of a carb being too big is that driveability will suffer from off idle and no amount of tuning will help it. are you planning on changing the intake to install the carb?

the EB carbs don't relate directly CFM-wise to holleys. EB's are considered more of a "daily driver" carb, they're more sensitive to low end throttle response. i don't think an EB 750 is going to ruin your day at all, even a holley 750 vacuum would be on the big side but still OK. BTW, there are much better cams than the EB stick. most say it's a dog.

I have a 390 punched 60 over with race heads and a 850 double pumer sitting on top Its old now but its a little much I thiink for a daily driver also what would be a good intake and cam combo? the 400 would be fairly stock dont know if I will punch it 30 over or just freshen it up with rings

Whoever told you got it backwards. Large CFM carbs run lean because there is a lower vacuum signal in the venturi but that doesn't prevent you from tuning.

My only suggestion would be to rethink your cam choice. I've heard of too many people that just aren't really happy with the Edelbrock cam. The favorite around here seems to be the Comp Cams 255 or 265 grind cams.

For better driveability try an Edelbrock 600 CFM carb. A stock or even mild build 400 does not need to rev to 6000+ RPM to operate so go smaller on the carb for better fuel mileage and driveability.

What they said. Use the 600 Edelbrock and either the Comp dual energy or Crane powermax cam. Check their description to make sure you fall into the right compression ratio for the cam you choose.

Before selecting a cam. ask yourself 'What do I plan to use the vehicle for?'

If you are looking for lots of torque at low RPM, select a short duration cam with reasonable lift. A Comp Cams 255DEH or XE256 will work well with stock compression. If you want power at highway speeds for towing, a Comp Cams 265DEH or XE262 is better, but you should boost the CR over stock by going to flattop pistons.

An Edelbrock #1406, Performer Intake, and headers will finish it off.
