Hey all, I've looked at this message board many times. I've heard alot of good information. Here is my question. I have a 71 long bed, 351w, 3 on the tree, original rear end, 9" I think. Holly 600. Engine is stock otherwise. Truck was originally a 302. My father bought the truck new and i've had it for the last 22 years. It was my first vehicle and I'm still driving it. I've had several newer trucks but I was never satisfied unless I was in my old 71. So I fixxed it up. To the point , I've seen some 67-72 trucks with an original overdrive, what kind of setup was this and is it something I could find for my 71? If not What would be a good alternative?
ok...
if you want you could go to a 5 sp tremec t-5 or tko(needs more work but can handle more power) with little or no work behind that 351w. unless you want to go to a 4 sp.
um... www.ford-muscle.com has info on a swap.
and there are a few other places to look.

The Gear Vendors overdrive works real good (only 22% od) but it's not gonna be cheap. Bolts to the rear of the tranny and replaces the tail shaft (on my auto). You can switch it in and out while rowing the gears and have six speeds! It's also tough, they put em in dump trucks.

Another OD alternative is Advanced Adapters' Ranger box. It sandwiches in between bellhousing and front of regular transmission, and is shifted by a second gearshift lever.
27% OD, a $1,000 cheaper than Gear Vendors, and a whole lot of work to install. I know--I just put one in!
THANKS FOR THE INFO. I TALKED TO A GUY TODAY WHO HAS AN ORIGINAL 72 WITH A 302, 3 ON THE TREE WITH OVERDRIVE. HE IS GOING TO PULL IT AND PUT IN A C-6,,SO HE IS SUPPOSED TO GIVE ME A SHOT AT THE OVERDRIVE. I'LL LET YA'LL KNOW WHAT I FIND OUT ABOUT IT.
Hey, I'm not mad at anybody, I just don't type very good, but I do thank you for the help. I'm trying to learn my way around this board and not very computer litearate. haha
If you can, I would look at the installation before he pulls it out. If it is what I suspect, there are lots of little things that go with this set-up that you need to have to go with it.
(carb switch, lever under dash, some wiring etc.)
