I tried this on the other board but did'nt get any responses so Ill try it here. I have a 71 f-100 long bed that my father bought new and I've had the last 22 years. It has an almost stock 351w I put in and a 3 on the tree. I've seen other trucks in the past that had what appeared to be a stock overdrive that was operated by a handle under the dash. What kind of set-up was this and is it something that would be available today? Any thoughts would be appretiated.
fella i have been working on a 57 t-bird that has overdrive and has the cable under the dash. the overdrive section is housed in the tailshaft section. i have never seen this set up on late 60s or 70s truck with the shifter on the column. that might be a difficult deal to configure. you may know that ford has used the three speed with overdrive that used the floor shifter.
Yes, it was available, but not very common. I have only seen two in my lifetime ( both in trucks of about '70 vintage ). It's operated by your right foot, not the cable under the dash. That keeps overdrive from engaging when it is pulled out. If you pull it out while overdrive is engaged, it goes CRUNCH and you don't have overdrive anymore.
