Before you opt to go to the pro, first read fenders instructions from three years ago. I followed them and was able to install the three-piece Roddoors headliner. I upholstered it myself and it turned out great. The three piece was very difficult to put in, so I am glad that the one-piece is now available. I have heard that it is a much easier install. I would point out to anyone doing it yourself to read the isntructions carefully. Roddoors suggests that you not rap the material around the edge of the plastic if the edge is not showing. So, anything being held in place by the Z rubber over the windshield and doors should not have the material rapped around. As stated earlier, this makes the edge too thick and it will not fit properly. I say you can do it yourself. The article by fenders also tells which of the 3M spray adhesives to use. The right adhesive, along with the proper material (mine cost $25/yd) makes for a smooth installation. Good luck, Jag
There is a lot of info on upholstering the ABS and installing their various components and the products they offer on the Rod Doors web site: www.roddoors.com
I'll have to check out the new one piece Rod Doors design. Sounds interesting. The side pieces of the three piece kit were a PITA for sure, but it was certainly a project you could whip in a few hours. Once you are ready for the actual install anyway. The fabric wasn't too bad to install, though I'd definitely recommend practice on a small piece first. My headliner is still perfect after a few years. The glues recommended in that mega thread still apply. Gear Up contributed to the thread, and glue debate. He does aircraft interior for a living. I've done upholstery over molded designs as well. Smooth is definitely easier, and would make a better first project.
You could handle it Ed, as could most of the folks here. It sounds like the hard part was already corrected by Rod Doors. It requires a moderate amount of patience. Just don't skip the practice part, so you don't ruin your cloth with glue soak through.
