my swap to 456's from 410's got me .5 mpg better , the improvement is all in accell. from a stop and how it now tows on long grades.
if you are thinking bigger tires then if you go too big your going to need to regear lower to get back what you lost
Charlie Im sure the accelleration improvement is great and towing it has to help as well but what kind of Interstate speeds are you driving? I find it hard to believe that you have better mileage running 70-80 on the interstate. You have to be well above 3000 rpm with those gears.

Even if he didn't put bigger tires on it, 4.56's will only get him up to 2500 or so with O/D (more like 2450).
This is what I like to call a Ford Modular quirk. Sometimes, lower gearing (and slightly higher RPMs) HELP the gas mileage.
For instance, my '96 t-bird 4.6L came stock with 3.27's. I put in 3.73's and the right speedo gear, and my MPG went from 24 on the highway to 26!!! And yes, I was very careful checking speeds, mileage between two points (same before and after gear swap), GPS checked, etc.
Others here have the same thing happen with the V10. A truck with 3.73's gets horrible towing mileage, and pretty decent highway miles. Mine for instance, gets 15MPG on the highway. If I were to go to 4.30's, chances are the highway mileage wouldn't change, PLUS the stop-and-go mileage will go up (unless I can't keep my foot out of it). And, towing, better MPG than the 3.73's.
Goes against the old rule of thumb, I know, but that's what happens with a very efficient motor. It can run at a higher RPM, but because the gears take some load off the motor, the result is BETTER mileage. Or at least, no change.
hmmm well thats probably something Ill be looking into this summer along with the new tires, these stock ones leave a little to be desired, but thats not a complaint, just something thats comes with new vehicles generally.
Im just so nervous about the thing staying together after my experiences, LOVE the V10 still though.
