I got my truck back today after having 4.88's installed front and rear. All I can say is wow what a difference this makes. I had the stock 3.73's running on 36x16.50 D Cepeks. Wasn't a dog at all but, just felt like it wasn't getting it all to the ground. But not now. Wow what a difference. This thing really comes alive. Only other mods are Aeroturbine muffler, Stan's headers Y-pipe and Superchips programer. I'm liking this.
Do you fellas know if you have to do any computer upgrades with a gear swap? If I remember right, the speedo will be OK because it reads off the ring gear but what about the TQ Shift tranny? Different RPMs @ speed won't effect it? Thanks.
well, ony mine (2001 F350 w/ 38"s and 5.13's), I could not correct for oversize tires, gears or anything. The Super Chips programmer (at least the model 1715 I have) will not correct for gears or oversize tires. Super Chips told me it has to have a digital speedo (electronic) for the programmers to work. I think only F150s can be corrected. Maybe there's some type of aftermarket speedo kit that you can use to correct your mph, however I have not found it yet. Mine is off by about 10 mph.
If you change the gears, reset the computer and let it re-learn. Although with the '05-up, you might need to change a setting in the computer - I think captchas said there is a parameter for gears in the newer ones.
I put a 3.73 rear in my '96 t-bird without resetting the computer. It had 3.27's stock. I did change the speedo gear so the speedo read correctly.
On the initial test-drive, I got the O/D light on. Drove home, disconnected computer for the night, never a problem afterwards.
Even with the speedo gear change, the computer knew something was MUCH different after changing the gears. Moral of this story: Reset the computer after re-gearing, at the very least.
And correct, with the SD's, a gear change doesn't need anything to make the speedo read correctly. But with the newer '05-up, there might be a gear parameter in the computer.

yes due to the input and out put shaft sensers, the t.s. most know the tire size and rear gear ratio.
the tire size by it self will affect the speedo
useing my sct excalibrater 2 and sct's extreme tune a free down load from them i made my gear change and tire size adjustments in less then 10 mins. the extreme tune programs askes for rear axle ratio and tires size on a 05 ts trans, it also lets you make some adjustments to the tune and shift on your own.
it's what i used paul. check out sct's website www.sctflash.com and down load the extreme tune program .make up your own mind after you read the information.
that tuner can do more then just make adjustments to the tune ,shift, tire size, axle ratio. you can also use live link to read the operation perimators of about 400 areas of the pcm while in operation.
my swap to 456's from 410's got me .5 mpg better , the improvement is all in accell. from a stop and how it now tows on long grades.
if you are thinking bigger tires then if you go too big your going to need to regear lower to get back what you lost
I'd throw some 4:56 in there that way if you ever go back to a smaller tire it wont be geared way to low. I hate my 3:73's they are pathetic. Now I have 3:73 in my mustang that has probably a 30" rear tire, and that is a perfect gear setup. If you need more gear than that just shut the overdrive off.
NATE
I was gonna go with 4.56's but, I have the reverse rotation dana 60 up front and the only gears available in that neighborhood are 4.30's or 4.88's. and already running 36 x 16.50's and possibly upgrading to 38 x 15.50's in the future, the 4.30's weren't an option for me so I went with the 4.88's.I will tell you guys this much. This truck really pulls like a beast now.Have to be really carefull with moisture on the road because it'll really break loose now.I can't really report on any mileage increases just yet. I'll keep you guys posted.
