Well thanks to all the advise givers and opinions. I made the chaneg from the 4.30's to the 4.88 gears on Monday. Even changed out the upper and lower ball joints while I was at it. Also changed out the carrier bearings. Got an alingment wow what a difference much tighter steering and much better gas milage around town. about 12 on the highway running at 75-80.
With the new gears it is much faster off the start. Going to do some towing next weekend and that will be the big test
How do the 4.88 gears work out for you? Did you notice any mileage difference? I've got an Ex, lifted 6" with 37" tires. I think I've got 3.73 gears. Not enough to do the job. It keeps shifting down on slight grads on the highway. I was thinking of 4.56. But reading the posts it sounds like 4.88 would be my best bet. Any input? Where does your rpm's sit at now? Thanks.

That's a lot of tire and lift to overcome. Whatever you choose WILL net you better mileage. 5.xx:1 would be my choice.
I noticed that at 70 MPH I am at 2600 rpm's its much faster out of the whole and down shift a lot less. I did notice that if I am at 65 on the flats gas milage goes up alot (1 or 3mpg). Any fatser and I am back at 11.5 ish for the over 75 driving... I will be towing 150miles pluss to Palm Springs this weekend and I will et you know how it does...
I think the hardest this is for me to get used to the truck now that I have the new gears.
Ok on the new 4.88 gears I ran 160 Miles through the hills of So Cal from the coast to Palm Springs pulling the 34 ft Toyhauler. Weight was about 11K. Loaded with food, misc, gas, propane. On the way ou there I did 7.6 miles to the gallon. on the way back I played with the lie-o-meter a little. On the flats i could use overdrive and pull at 65 25-2500rpm. on the hills I had to use 3rd gear at 3000-3200rpm at 55-60.
Coming out of Palm spring back home we had 40-50 mph head winds and boy could you feel it....I think I was in 2nd gear at 4000 rpm trying to go 45-50 just getting plastered by the wind...
All in all I am happy with the gearing... Pic of the rig and truck will be up tomorrow

Thanks again for all the help..
Hey Kappy,
I was looking to go to a 4:10 to help my setup ... but a 4:30 would also work ... do you still have the gear sets? Need to get rid of em?
