I need to replace the original steering wheel on my '72 F-100. I've checked a few salvage yards with no luck. I see that Dennis Carpenter sells a replacement 2 spoke wheel, but it only comes in black @ $250 + $100 for a new horn pad assembly.
Anyone have any luck buying one of those and painting it?
I'd like to keep the original style wheel if possible.
I got one of the black ones and it really does look great. I'm told that epoxy paint is the way to go to hold up on a steering wheel, but haven't tried it yet. The only types I've been able to find are appliance paint colors, so may have to go custom at a paint store. My original was medium blue.
There must be something from a newer Ford truck there. I don`t know for sure if it will work but why not use a wheel from a 73/79 Ford truck? Also some Ford cars have the same splines. Just watch that the horn contacts on the bottom of the wheel and the dish on the wheel are the same.
I've been looking for a '71-'77 F-Series with with a medium blue steering wheel in good condition. The medium blue and good condition criteria are what seems to be the problem at the salvage yards.
Boneman, have you checked out the "color bond" interior paint at lmctruck.com? On pg. 70 of their '57-'72 ford truck catalog. They have a "blue" that looks like it could be a medium blue. It might be worth $12 to see if it matches.
I think I'm going to buy some of their paint and test spray on some plastic and see how well it matches my interior. If it does I'll probably go with the DC wheel.
I went the other direction and put an older 3 spoke wheel on my '72...I like the classic look. I got it out of the local pick-a-part so it isn't perfect. Also I don't have PS so the 1/2" bigger diameter helps a bit.
Have you checked on eBay? Also, you can buy steering wheel restoration kits, to repair cracks and re-paint. I think Eastwood carries them, as well as special steering wheel paint.

Thanks. I'm afraid my wheel may be to far gone for repair.
I'd have to pull it to be sure, but I think it's not only cracked, but may be warped as well. But it's definitely something for me to consider. Thanks.
