96 neon engine

is a 4 cylinder out a 96 neon a non valve interference engine, or is there a lot more to worry about it with a busted timing belt?

I am 99% sure that is an engine (2.0) that will allow the pistons and valves to hit. the old 2.2 and 2.5 were free running.

yes the 2.0 is an interference engine. If it has broken a belt you probably have some bent valves.

Probably ought to pull the head to put in the updated head gasket too, if it hasn't gotten it. If it's got a small oil leak, it's the updated. If the underside of the car is coated with oil, and sometimes drops of oil run up the windshield, it's not the updated one.
