My wipers haven't worked in a while. They occasionally work but more often they don't. My dealer said I need a new GEM module. Quoted around $450.
Question: Would I have trouble getting the dealer to program the thing for me if I bought the part elsewhere? Seems like somebody on here said one time that a dealer programmed theirs for $70. THANKS.

I just did a search in my Helm CD manual on a GEM? module in the wiper system and came up with jack squat. Sound suspicious to me.Could just be a simple poor electrical connection requiring cleaning or replacing. In my 26 years of electronics/electrical work an intermittent problem was usually a faulty connection.
nut
Sometime after the 99s, Ford eliminated the GEM module and replaced it with the VSM. My 02 has a VSM and the wiper system is not controlled by it. It has more to do with the multifunction switch than anything but strangely enough, the VSS and Antilock system is also tied into the wiper system.
I know none of this helps and we need someone with a diagram for the 99s, but from what I've heard, the GEMs and VSMs do about the same things, so I'd be a little suspicious of what the Stealership it trying to sell you.
Oh man!! That would be crazy if they're wrongly pushing me the GEM module! LOL! There's no rhyme or reason to when the wipers work. They hardly ever do when I need them to. But isn't it strange I can manually make them go by pushing the 'wash' button? It seems like wiring to me, too. Should I take it to a reputable independent shop and have somebody look into it?
