I think the 6 speed tranny from the Expy should make it to the F150. With the right gear ratio, it should really wake up the feel of the truck. That's the biggest reason the Nissan feels more powerful.
I agree. The 4 speed autos in our trucks are great, smooooth transmissions but it would be nice to have a five or six speed transmission of the same quality. My wifes explorer has a five speed automatic....really nice.
I guess since the 5.4L is putting out 80% of its torque rating at 1000rpm, Ford didn't need or want to spend the money on developing a five speed automatic. But on the other hand, Dodge and Nissan both have five speed automatics in there 1/2 ton trucks. I wouldn't be suprised if a five speed shows up on the F150 in a couple years. I'm sure the new 2007 Tundra will have a five or maybe six speed automatic?
Dont be surprised if you see the V10 option go into the F150 in the next few years. I am from Windsor and the talk is going around that the F150 is going to have a limited run with the Windsor built V10 to compete with the Hemi until a new more powerful V8 (which is also in the works) goes into production. Of course this is all speculation in these uncertain times. 365hp in an F150 would be pretty wild!!
well it would seem like ford is going to have to do something with the 5.4 as it is rated a 300 hp and they have now gone and revamped the 4.6 in the explorer to have 290 hp.
does the F150 also get this updated 4.6?
I also have been salivating over the idea of a 5or 6 spd transmission .
my 02 ranger had a 5 spd auto tranny backing up the 3.0 and it was what made that truck ALMOST fun to drive
The Explorer new 4.6 may have 292HP vs 300HP, but no where near the torque of the 5.4 3V 365ftlbs @ 3750 vs 300ftlbs @ 3950. One of the changes I bet you will see is the 4.6 truck engine @ 231HP go to the 4.6 292 HP.
Anybody know if Ford is working on a "dicplacemnet on demand" engine that will go from 8 cylinders down to 4 on highway? I know that the new dodges have somthing simular in the Ram and GM has somthing like that in their new SUVs.
Funny part of ther Hemi dispacement on demand, it seems they needed everything they could to get as much MPG out of the HEMI. Brother in law has a 300 with a HEMI, which has the displacement feature, gets 24mpg on the hwy.
