Hello
I'm rebuilding a 351M engine. Can anyone please tell me which way to install the oil pump connecting rod. Thisis the rod between the distributer and oil pump. There is a clip on one end. does this clip go towards the top or does it sit on the pump end? any help would be apreciated
CJ
He's correct, so you don't get confused as to what he meant by down, the clip goes up against the block so when you lift the distributor out at some time, it won't pull the shaft out of the oil pump. If you put it next to the pump you can see that would allow the shaft to come out & fall into the pan, (don't ask me how I know).
Yeah, mine happened on a 302 with a lot of miles. Was trying to pull the distributor out & it was hung on the shaft for some reason. It wouldn't come all the way out, of course I forced it, then heard this sickening sound as the shaft fell into the pan. I pulled hard enough it forced the little washer down the shaft far enough to come out of the pump.
Been there done that on my 460 and pulled the motor to retreive it. Later found afterwards it would not fall all the way in because of a ledge design inside. On my 460 I only had to remove timing cover and there it was and put it back. I learned from that one. It is still a pain when they fall out. Isn't there a better way to have hold that shaft in snug?
