what code reader for 2002 mitubishi lancer

one of my roomates has a 2002 mitubishi lancer. He's throwing a code and idling weird. I was wondering if an obdII code reader would work in his car. If not, what will?

ANY OBDII reader should work. Does he have "performance" exhaust on it? That can cause some issues in the computer at times.

Sorry about the miss post torque1st. IT's just your basic lancer; all stock, about 75k miles on it.

Take it to an Autozone or Schuck's/Kragen/Checker if you have them there. They should read the codes for free.

thanks to caplax and pfogle, I was hoping that the obdII would work and he's going to be happy if somebody will do it for free. I really wasn't sure if the foreigns had a different type of coding system.
