loose tie rod

i have a 1975 F-100 with a loose tie rod on the left (i can wiggle the rod about a quarter turn) , the right tire was cupping and i have practically no return of steering along with a popping sound when i turn slow.can the loose tie rod be causing all this or is there something else wrong too.any help would be appreciated, thanks.

loose tie rod

The tie rod should not have any play in it at all, side to side or up and down. If you can only swivel it a little on the joint it is OK yet. As far as the popping and lack of steering return (assuming it is a 2 wheel drive) I would suspect the kingpins are probably about froze up. I had the same problem with a '73 F150 I had. I'd have to crank the steering wheel back straight after going around a turn just as hard as it was to turn into the turn on the way in. I had tried pulling the caps, soaking them with penetrating oil to clean them up, then greasing the heck out of them, but it wasn't ever right until I replaced the kingpins. Made it drive like a new truck.
