When I got new tires but on my van('88 3.0 Shorty) the mechanic told me that the inner tie rod was bad and needed to be replaced. He quoted $200 and I said I would do it myself. I have noticed a big clunk comming from the front then I turn corners so something is loose up there. But anyway, here is the problem: I looked in my Haynes manual and I could not find anything about the inner tie rod or how to fix it. I saw in the Aerostar problems thread that a lot of you have had to do this so someone must know how or can show me where to look.
They can be rebuilt but you will need to pull the entire rack. If you purchase 2 new ends and a seal kit, boots, clamps, special clamp pliers, etc, you will have nearly the same amount (or more) invested as a rebuilt unit would cost. You can purchase a remanufactured unit from AutoZone and others for around $95.00.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Feb-02 AT 01:37 PM (EST)]Beware of rebuilt racks . . .
Though my rebuilt works OK and doesn't leak (with 21k on it), the input shaft was loose from Day One. And the first one I bought didn't fit! The shaft ends, where the tie rod ends thread, were wrong in some fashion (wrong size? wrong thread? I can't recall).
Mine is a "DDR-PR920" from the receipt; I don't know who did the rebuilding. I paid $98 in fall of '99.
It's very easy to replace on the 2WD Aero. Don't overtighten the PS high pressure line.
I just had to replace one of the rack boots last week (Geez, it's only two years old!). Bought and installed NAPA 269-1582, $15.34 (ea.) for my '89.
