Check Engine Light

Does my 87 even have a check engine light? I've seen an emsions light but that is it.

it should be o the left right above the wiper control switch and come on for a few sec when you turn the key to acc

I would think that emsions light is the CEL/MIL light.

The EMISS light is not the same as the check engine light, and is operated solely based on run time. There is a spot in the dash that says check engine, but the gauge cluster is not wired for the light. It can be wired in, but that might be more work than it would be to check the codes with a voltmeter.
