CCV Prototype - input wanted

I'm getting ready to do my CCV mod but the idea of having oil spots on my driveway doesn't appeal to me very much. I'm putting together a "catch can" to collect oil condensate and plan on mounting it behind the drivers front wheel. I'm calling this a prototype because I am not totally sure of the design and would like to have other opinions before I actually mount it and run hose. I have a link below to see what I have put together so far.

I also plan on inserting a test pressure port near the doghouse and do some pressure tests with an open hose, with the can connected and then periodic tests as miles are put on the mod with a water manometer.

Thanks in advance.......

Warning, the link below has about 1/2 meg of pictures embedded so if you're on a slow internet connection, you may want to have some time on your hands. Click here ---> PROTOTYPE

Very nice work. You may want to mount it further back so you won't smell it through the driver's window. Mine stunk but had no filtering.

Looks good. My only concern would be having enough flow, but I assume you've tested it for flow. You certainly don't want to have pressure building up inside that can.

Most of the CCV mods I've heard of though, don't drip a bit of oil. I actually have a catch can of sorts on mine, as I was worried about it too. I just ran mine into the top of an empty 1qt paint can and mounted it right under the bed on the frame, really close to the floor of the bed. In the last year, I've never found a drop of oil in it. I also have never found any standing water in it, even though it is a completely open top. I used to check it about once a week at first, then once a month, and still no oil or water in it.

However, your design would keep you from having to run the lines all the way to the back of the truck.

That's pretty cool man - hope it works for ya! I did the same kinda thing when I first did my ccv mod, made a fancy catch can, but all it did was still stink from underneath the truck. I finally ended up running the ccv into my exhaust and was done with it!

That's some nice work there guzzle. I'm thinking that scotchbrite will filter out a lot of the vapors and reduce the amount of smoke coming from the CCV while allowing the pressure to vent to atmosphere.

Guzz,

That's SLICK!! Nice, well-thought-out engineering.

However, I gotta join the bandwagon of those who have never had a drop from their hose vented to free air. Mine runs all the way to the rear.

However, I live in reasonably dry, warm country, and would never have any concerns about condensate freezing inside the hose.

Again, nice job!

Thanks for everyones comments! I'm on my way down to the parts store to pickup 17ft of hose, clamps and misc stuff.
I don't know why some 7.3 posters have LOTS of oil and others have none Maybe location/weather or engine condition.
What I have gathered from this thread is:
1. My choice of mounting location was not good. I'm going to run it back to the rear axle. I stink enough by myself!
2. I may not need the trap at all but I have made it so I'll mount to the back of the fuel tank shroud. If it turns out that I never have any oil in it, I can simply remove it and leave the hose free.

I'm going to use a 3" piece of SS tube that's left over from my MBRP install to eliminate the restrictive intake connection and mount the tube to the factory bracket with a CT clamp. I'll post some pics and pressure test results when I get 'er done. Thanks again.

Guzzle, instead of using a lot of rubber hose to go all the way to the back, get some PVC plumbing. You can hang it along the frame and it will run the vapors all the way back without creating low spots along the way. Low spots are what seems to cause all the trouble with the condensing and clogging problems. If they remove the low spots the problem goes away.

when i had my CCV exiting into the atmosphere instead of the exhaust, it never dripped. i inspected a portion of the hose i had to cut off to put it in the exhaust, and there was no oil buildup on the inside whatsoever. the type i used must have been pretty slick. plus there was a constant downward slope from the doghouse to the bung on the exhaust, and no oil could puddle in the hose.

but that setup looks cool, i bet you could mass produce and sell some of them!

I had mine open in the rear for 4 months with no leaks, a couple weeks ago I put mine in the exhaust. No smokey plumb(that looked like an exhaust leak) under the truck anymore and only a little smoke out of the exhaust tip. Much better.

I made a canister for my ccv mod. I did have it hooked to my stacks but it always smoked out one stack when idleing and had oil running down it. So my canister catches all the oil and i hooked the ccv back to my intake. Now i have no smoke under the truck and no oil in my intake (or very little! I have checked) I will try to get a pic of my canister. It has baffles inside which collect the oil and allow the the smoke to recirculate!

P.S I had a low spot in my hose when i first did my ccv mod to the stacks. After awhile the hose filled with oil from the mist. In the cold weather the oil thickened enough to plug the vent. Once it plugged oil began to leak from the dipstick tube at the oil pan because the cc pressure had know were to go! So becarefull. I like my new setup because the canister catches the oil and i still get a slight vacumm from the intake. I am not saying it will happen to you but this was my experiance!! Also i did have my hose routed over the master cylinder. Maybe my satck setup caused to much suction.
