I have a 79 F250 Crew Cab. I am tinkering with the idea of installing a 7.3 N/A from a 91 during the restoration (if I ever have the time and money). I already have a strong running motor. Has anyone ever tried this? Would it be worth the time/effort? any comments.
It has been time and again, you have to like the diesels to begin with though. They behave a little different than a gasser, but the fuel economy and the pulling torque can't be matched. Go turbo and really get the numbers... From what I have read around here, the install is fairly simple as far as swaps go, but keep in mind that the front will be heavier with a diesel. If you choose to do it, be sure to get a trans with it as well. The bell doesn't quite share with a gas engine.
You have to be a diesel guy to like a diesel truck and you wont know that until you do it. I've had both, and for a WORK or TOW vehicle the diesel can't be beat by any GAS setup, but for a dailey driver I'd stay with the gas.
I've had multiple Diesel trucks over the years and have really had good luck with all of them. I'm just not sure how easily the conversion will go. Not many 79 4X4 Crewcabs around and I'll bet not many people have put a Diesel in one. Just thinking about trying something different.
Thanks,
i am putting built 6.9 turbo in my 76 s/c 2wd had to do modifications to front crossmember and had custom mounts made 400-500 hp 700ft lbs torque.......and she runs on waste motor oil so costs nothing to drive her

I don't want to hijack too much here, but I have to know what your doing to get 400-500 horsepower from a turboed 6.9?
thats what i am hoping for. at least 300+ its going to be real hard to start when cold out , just want to use it to tow 5er with out losing power on hills.
