Rear Axel Advice

My mechanic tells me I need a rear axel on my 72 F100. What I'm wondering is if any rear axel off of a 72 F100 will fit, or is there a particular size/type I need to be looking for?

Quick advice greatly appreciated, as I'm on foot until this puppy is back up and running.

Anything between 1968 and 1972 truck should fit.
The parking brake systems may differ so keep your old axle for parts.
What is wrong with your axle?
axle shaft bearings can be replaced and the rear diff of the 9 inch can be swapped out pretty easily also.
Saying an axle is bad is is incorrect unless the housing is bent, cracked or twisted.
Did your mechanic mean axle shaft or the whole thing?
Good luck.
Ken

if you have a ford 9" and need a axel shaft you are going to have to settle for a salvage axel or have one (or both if you have the money to spend) custom built by some one like Currie Ent. or Strange Eng. Because to the best of my knowledge no one (parts house, mech., after market supplier) can lay there hands on one. Because as told by my local Ford Parts man, ford discontinued the 68-72 axles (ford 9") and never relesed the wrights to the aftermarket companies. I dont know individual axel prices but a complete standard axel package (axels, plates, bearings, seals, ect.) runs $399.99 + shipping because i just ordered one tues. due to a snaped axel on my 70 f100. Good luck finding what you need!!

2 yrs ago, I snapped an axle on my 72 4x4 F100. Went to the local drive line shop and he ordered me two of them. Figured I might as well do the whole axle. he said it was the same axle as the Bronco used. But dont remember what yr. I just remember it was a 31 spline.

After 72, the perches were moved outwards about an inch on each side, due to a wider rear frame.

jared,

you are correct on that. but moving them in is such a snap i never considered it a big issue. but it could be if you don't have a welder.
