Rebuilt steering box on my 2WD 76 F350 supercab with 460 is leaking pretty badly. I'm not sure I want to go with another re-manufactured unit. Is it possible to get a new after-market unit? Local dealer doesn't have one. This one works okay except for the leak(s).
John usually a topseal or the bottom seals will take care of most leaks. We just bought a lower kit for $10.00 sat. There are two seals stacked in there.

In the cool still quiet of night you can hear chevies rusting away.
Looks like it's leaking from the lower end--believe that called the sector shaft end (attached to pitman arm). Can the lower seals be replaced without removing the unit from the truck, e.g., Can both seals be pulled from the lower end, or does the inner one have to be "pushed" from the opposite end; can the seals be driven in with a bushing driver, or do they have to be pressed in. "Beartracks", I don't see a bushing on the lower end diagram in my shop manual--just a couple of spacer washers.
Thanks to all who are providing input to this--really appreciate all the good advice.
hey vettman you can do that repiar in the truck. what i have done is jack the front end up put it on jack stands. straighten front wheels remove pitman arm remove snap ring use screwdriver or somthing similar to pry out the seals not the easiest to remove but can be done new kit should have installation instr.
another way is to remove the pitman arm go up under the hood find the two bolts that hold the sector shaft in remove them and go back underneath tap the shaft with brass hammer or something else suitable that wont damaged the threads pull shaft out look through the top and you will see the seals down there long bladed screwdriver or punch to knock the seals out instal in reverse manor hope this helps
hey vettman this is a follow up to the last responce if you remove the shaft you can use a bushing driver to instal the seals more difficult if shaft is still in there i have also used a piece of pipe or socket the same outside diameter of the seals to instal them. depending on the year of that truck ford used to use the housing of the gear box as the bushing later years went to a needle bearing
It's been a while since I worked on mine but I think I bought a seal kit that included a think bushing to replace the washers. They may fall out then you get the seals out.
