Exclamation Dealer says BAD IDM. Suggestions ?

hey fte. The truck is at the dealer ship now and the dealer called me about an hour ago. he says " Are you sitting down for this " i was like sure go for it. and he said the IDM has gone bad and its going to be around $$1400 dollars to fix.

The question i have is do i have it towed back to my house and fix it myself ? or have the dealer work on it in their fancy bays ? And Is the IDM an easy fix or does it require flashing. basically is it a job that can be tackled by the average know it all diesel owner?

I also saw a reman IDM for a fraction of the price with a life time warranty and a good selling history of IDM's sold with no negative feed back. Ive been burned both ways so im lookin for any advice on changing out the IDM.

Thanks,
Ryan

Get your truck as far away from that dealer as soon as you can. You can buy a reman for less then 200.00 and install it yourself. It sits on top of the drivers fender well. There are threads about this, I will try to find one.

I thought I needed a IDM dealer wanted either 900- 1000 depending on which one I needed part only. I ended up getting the one your looking at for 200.00. When I removed mine and installed the remained unit the truck would not start. I sent it back and he returned my money no problem. I ended up taking apart all my connectors and using a little dielectric grease on the connectors and my problems were fixed. I am not sure you need the IDM or if the dealer is just changing parts. They have no problem selling you parts you may or may not need IMHO. A Curtis

Can anyone say "UVCH connector"?

Seems to be a rash of them lately.

Check that first.

Oh, yes, get it AWAY from that dealership ASAP, without dropping any additional cash to them for their know-nothing diagnosis.

Sheesh!

Hey thanks for all the replies so fast. Im gettin as far away from them as possible. I hope its the idm i ordered it for 190 2 day air. i want that thing in asap and get my truck going. If it still doesnt run ill put some di electric grease and check the connections. He was so persistant on having me agree to them putting it in. they even offered to garage my truck for a week. I guess i would too if all i had to todo is throw a computer replacement in.

Hey thats pretty similar to my situation. Im hoping the dealer is correct because i had to pay 125 dollars for the diagnostics. But when i pull the stuff apart ill check all the wires from the idm. I checked the UVCH too and all the connections so im hoping its the idm.

It fits the bill for the symptoms i had over the last 4 weeks. I dont know where they get off charging 1400 for this.

Yeah the UVCH connector had me worried. I checked the connections out side but not under the valve covers. Ill look there if the idm doesnt work since its mid air right now anyway haha.

Im not to fond of the dealership he said he had to put it all back together before i could grab it with the tow truck.... that concerns me even more. Im givin it a thourgh look over when i get it back.

I wonder that too. Although i pulled most of my connectors off and did put some dielectric grease in them. I went down the list before i brought it to the dealer. I need to get me an AE scan software and check the codes for myself.

If it doesnt start ill start takingthem all apart and thoughly checking them
