bought another truck. '77 F250 4x4 out of Colorado. a customer of mine drove it here pulling a horse trailer. 351M/400 running on 7 cylinders 4 speed. this one is clean though . just a little rust above the rear fenders and that's it. nice bed with working tailgate, rust free-cab, gooseneck and reciever hitches, even has nearly new rubber on it. could use a paint job but probably won't get one (cream/off-white). this will be the replacement for the Blue Bomber, and will be recieving parts from it as well. definitly will be transplanting the seat and door panels, the dash pad, and possibly the C6 as well. then i'll be parting out the D60 and anything else desireable before sending the rusted hulk to the scrap yard.
yeah i know i must be one or the other, the question is, which one. the valve cover sticker says 351M/400 on it. i don't know how to tell the difference.
got it for $1300, which makes up for the $1800 i spent on my rust bucket '78 (with plow) 2 years ago. between the 2 trucks i can make a pretty nice hauler. the good news is the bad parts on the '77 (interior) are really nice on the '78
hope to get a few bucks out of the '78 in the end so i can call it even.
thanks Dennis. i guess if i'd wiped a little more grease off the sticker i'd have seen that. i was really looking to see if it was a 360 or 390, once i saw the 351/400 i quit looking.
i'm hoping the 7 cylinder problem is a head issue, then i can just swap one over from my '78. a block or ring problem is obviously more hassle. it does run pretty good already though, starts right up
it could just be something stupid like a bad plug, dist cap, or wire also. before pulling the motor apart, do a compression test.my 79 ran like crap when i got it back from the kids. only running on 6 cylinders. they said the motor was bad. did a tuneup, and all was well again.
for sure i will do a compression test, but the PO had one done and said it did have one cylinder at 60% compared to the others. but the truth is yet to be seen. i'm just happy to have found a decent body/frame to mess with. i have a 6.9 on a stand, i may eventually do a diesel conversion. who knows. i'll rule out the simple stuff before doing anything drastic.
turns out to be a 351M. brand new holley 4 barrel carb. 4 speed tranny with granny low and a part time transfer case. the lever for the t case is not working so i'll have to get under there and check the linkage. right now the t case is in 4 hi, and i lock/unlock the front hubs as needed.
there are some differences between my '77 and my '78. the '78 has one more leaf at all 4 corners than the '77. also the '78 has a D60 front while the '77 has a smaller hub axle (D44?) both are 8 lug. '78 sits higher than the '77, probably due to the extra leaves. was there an F250 light duty and heavy duty back then?
the 351 in the '77 has a dead cylinder but still runs good on the other 7. the 400 in my old '78 has a busted distributor. i hope to find that the 351 has a head problem, so i an pillage one from the 400. not sure how i'm gonna figure that out yet, short of pulling the head off the 351 and looking at it and the bore for signs of damage. PO said that the dead cylinder hads 60% compression of the others. i'm hoping for a busted valve or valve seat.
i plan to stick the black interior from the '78 into the '77. then i will be parting out the '78.
