Bed Swap info needed.

I need to replace the bed on my 77 F250 Highboy.

I know the frames are wider on the 2WD models in 73- Early 1977.
Does it make any difference if it is a F150 instead of a F-250 ??? It looks like
they mounted slightly different, but it may just be my imagination.
I see there are some U shpaed brackets that look like they would need to be relocated possibly that sit on a crossmember, and of course new mounting holes.

Anyone with experience doing this ?

On a side note, I did run across a 75 bed with the passengers side tire storage compartment. How rare is that bed ? I have never seen one in person before, the bed was in really nice shape except for the front panel, and that is an easy fix when it is off the truck ! Trying to decide if I get that bed, just to be different, or not. Do I need to check wheelbase, as reading here makes me wonder if it was a camper special with possibly a different wheelbase. It did not have any camper special logo's on it.

only the f250 4x4's had the narrower frames from 73-77. You will have to find one off a similar truck.

That bed with the spare tire mount came off a F350 Super Camper Special. They had a longer wheel base. It will not work on your truck. Yes, they are pretty rare.

You could put a wide frame bed on your Highboy, you have to redrill all the mounting holes and try to hit the original holes in the Highboy frame. You will need to shim the replacement bed to get it back to where it was on the wide frame. 1" shim in the back, 3/4" on the next and 1/4" on the next 2.

If I had it to do over I would have repaired my Highboy box or found a box that fit without all the time spent making the wide frame box fit and look right.
I still have my Highboy box and may fix the wheelwells and put it back on.

The box with the spare tire compartment is off a 140" WB Super Camper Special, someone might pay a finders fee on that one.

The highboy bed swap might be a PITA but its worth it if you live where good beds are hard to come by.
Ive only seen one of those beds with the tire mount on the side. If I had the opportunity Id snag one and get some use out of it. Maybe not use it for carrying a spare tire but it would be a cool place to mount a tool box.

Thanks for the info. Here is a couple of pics of the bed with the side door. I need to see if I can ****** it up that truck and save it for someone instead of letting it get crushed. It was in really good shape overall.

Personally if I had an aux tank I wouldn't swap an earlier bed onto the truck. The problem is filling the gas tank. The earlier beds are known to puke gas out while filling. It has to do with the angle of the filler neck in the bed. The later beds with doors over the gas caps don't have this problem.

Rocket Racing,

You need to get that truck, it's not only a Super Camer Special, but an XLT, not too many were equipped for looks, most people that bought those new used them hard and threw them away and didn't care about ordering the XLT options.

ive got 2 Super camper special beds.
Ones pretty rusty but some of the panels would be OK if someone needed them?
I bought a plain SCS bed and am going to take the chrome off my origional bed and put it on.
I found a rust free bed with a few small dents 5 miles from home after I looked all over the pacific Northwest for one.
