i talked to a muffler shop today and priced out a system. i'll be replacing both cats with high flow cats and running dual outta the muffler. the man said the 40 series muffler would be loud an annoying. he suggested a magnaflow muffler. whats y'alls opinions? i dont mind loud. i dont' want extremelly loud. something with a nice grumble. oh... my other concern. i have a 3 spd tranny, so the revs at high way speed will be fairly high. so i don't want it screaming.
Depends on the sound You are looking for. Flowmaster has alot of different series mufflers. I run 40 Originals on 2 of my trucks. My 351 No-Cats, headers, true duals, like 4" tips.>>>Really loud!! My 5.4 has a cat, 3" single then 2-2 1/2" out with 3 1/2" tips and I wish it was louder. I'm gonna try a hi-flow cat.>> Louder, I hope.
do with glass packs stay away from flowmaster did a flow test on a lot of performance mufflers and the flowmaster flowed the same as a stock muffler the magnaflow did the best next to glass packs and straight pipe
i have a 351 in my truck and recently had the exhaust done. its got stock manifolds, and stock pipes until right past the o2 sensor. i then put cutouts, magnaflow high flow cats, and super 40 mufflers. its all true dual pipe, with maybe 3.5 tips on it. i wish it was louder. im looking at glasspacks currently. a flowmaster super 40 may be the way to go for you. with my radio turned up, i cant even hear my exhaust unless im really on it. hope that helps.
well sense i posted this, a year ago!! LOL JK. i cut off just past my cats. And i just developed a exhaust leak at the manifold. so... it looks like i'll be putting some headers on as well as everything else. i'll pots up when i get it all done.
Look into Spintech mufflers, the quiet series (8300)
also the longest are Truck RV's, they go up to their
full race just legal on Db controlled tracks.
Look at the flow tests on Flowmasters vs other
brands, this will make you sick if you own them.
I have learned alot since this post. Mufflers alone just don't get it. I believe they're pretty much for nothing but sound. After looking at a ton of dyno sheets. That is the proof. I was going to change mufflers on my 06 Stang. I mean... Whats the point. Only for sound. Most mufflers only give you like 1-4 hp.... Now with that said. A complete exhaust will do 20-40 hp. I guess it depends on what you are willing to spend on your truck. I have changed exhaust on my trucks for sound only. Offcourse a much louder truck makes you think it is faster. lol??? I made the mistake of replacing the cat on my 02 Super Duty with a straight pipe. I think I loss power. Gas milage went to crap. It sure is REALLY LOUD though...

Where can I find and read the flow tests you are speaking of? I would really like to see them. All the dyno's I have seen have been on the Mustangs. I sure flow tests are flow tests. Know what I mean?

A muffler is just a single part of the whole system. A simple muffler change will give minimal gains, but pipe, headers, etc. will all help a lot more as a whole. But almost never will there be a 20-40hp gain. At the flywheel, mabye. At the wheels, forget about it.

So.. You would agree with me? You can't say almost never. Either it is or it isn't. Lol? They're are several systems for Mustangs that do give 20-40hp gain. I am taking about at the rear wheels. Not the flywheel. These type of gains depends on what type of engine is in the vehicle.
The thing that adds confusion to the mix is some
manufactures test at 18 inHg some at 20, 25
and 5 inH20.
It's all over the chart and not a fixed standard
plus in real life your dealing with a hot gas pulse
vs steady room temperature flow of a flow machine.
Just by changing brand of motor or cam and build
combination on a given motor a single muffler will
go from a pleasing sound to hate it.
When a manufacture states a "slight drone" beware.
I concur I like this stuff and the way manufactures
do testing in different ways to their favor.
You be the judge it's your money.
