How can I tell what year my 460 is? The engine is out of my 74 F100, but I know it was not the original motor. The VIN shows the truck is a F100 with a 390, but the truck isa 3/4 ton with a 460 front sump oil pan. The only numbers I have found on the block are:
DIVE-A2B (stamped on the passenger side of block)
D3VE A1B (stamped on the front end of the intake manifold)
Can any of these numbers tell me the year of the engine, or do I need to look in another spot for id numbers?
The block is a 71 casting, the intake is a 73 casting. These casting numbers indicate the year that mold was first used and a revision code. Each block will also have a casting date which is the actual date that particular block was cast. It will look something like 3C05 which is March 5, 1973, 3 = last digit of the year, C = March and 05 = 05. The letters for the month correspond to the month's number: A = Jan (1), B = Feb(2) and so forth. The letter I is skipped so M = Dec(12).
problem with the D3VE casting is that it was used for several years, and the D1VE blocks were used from 71-78 but I am thinking (this is from memory so take it with a grain of salt and maybe someone will come in and correct me if I am wrong) but that particular revision casting number on the intake was only used 73 and 75 I believe the suffix changed in 75 or maybe it was the entire casting number on the intake.
I've never paid much attention to the revision codes as they relate to specific years. I always just cheat and look at the casting date. I don't know the precise methodology for how FoMoCo determines the revision codes but they generally start with 1 letter like A and work their way up through 2 and 3 characters.
A revision code like A2B would certainly indicate a later casting and assuming that all the parts from that engine came from the factory as is then that engine is at least a 73 and certainly could be a 75. The casting date should tell you more.
Thanks for the info. Just wanted to get a closer idea what year the engine is. I have the engine out of the truck to fix a few things, and wanted a better idea of age before I get a new oil pump, switch the pan/dipstick/pickup to a rear sump, and put on a new flexplate. Thought I read another thread about externally or internally balanced 460's, and it looks like my old flexplate is balanced.
it shouldn't be a balanced flexplate (I assume you are meaning it has a weight welded to it from the factory) with a D1VE block casting that is 78 or older and should be internal balance so I would look at that closely to make sure someone hasn't put the wrong flexplate on it.
As far as the oil pump pan and dipstick those interchange through all the years and you can buy a new pan dipstick and oilpump pickup for use in a 4x4 from ford directly I think the kit costs about $150 and hten just buy a rear sump oil pump.
Is the oil pump for a rear sump pan any different than for a front sump pan, except for the pickup tube? I assume it has to bolt onto the same location. Would an oil pump for a front and rear sump pan be two completely different pumps? Just want to make sure I know what I should be getting.
There are about three spots next to each other on the flexplate that look like someone started to drill around a 5/8" hole in the plate, but stopped short of going all the way thru. That's what made me think it was balanced.
Given the numbers I have on my block, I should still get a flexplate for any year 460 from 1971-78?
