I have a '99 F350PSD bought used. The truck had the Banks stinger package installed when I purchased it. The truck ran poorly once started, then it stalled and I had a hard time starting again, after it restarted, the truck ran ok that day but the prob. repeated the next day but this time, as I was accelerating the truck blew a large cloud of white/grey smoke from the tailpipe. The truck has 125000 mi on orig. engine. I had the mechanic remove the power chip and they replaced the PCM, a camshaft position sensor, and the exhaust back pressure sensor all three threw prob codes on their equipment. I pull a 34ft. fifth wheel that weighs approx 9000# when full between 150-200 mi every mo. I have read magazine articles where others have used this product and have experienced similar problems I have spoken to another individual that has the identical truck and used the banks otto minder also, He stated he took the chip out due to the truck stalling with it installed. Hope this is enough info.! Thanks
Did the truck run ok after all the parts were replaced? I don't think the Banks chip would cause the CPS (camshaft position sensor) to go out. They are not related, and CPS failure is a common problem with the PSD. A faulty CPS would also cause the hard starting and running problems that you described -- except for the white/grey smoke. That white greay smoke sounds like the truck wasn't warm when you gave it some throttle, and you might have a fault somewhere in the glow plug circuit. Whether its an actual glow plug, or the relay, I couldn't tell you. The exhaust back pressure sensor circuit code is common on chipped trucks. Shouldn't have caused any running problems like you described though.
So, how's it running now, after the parts replacement?
