Ok....we have finally got a nice day in New England to wash the truck. Upon washing the truck I noticed the top of the door on both sides the paint is peeling. Out of the blue this happend. I wash and wax it many times a year and never saw any bubbling or blistering. The affected area measuses 2-3 inches long by 1/4" wide. It is the leading edge where it meets the weather stripping.
How do I go about fixing this. Can someone give me step by step instructions to sand, primer, paint, and clear coat so this does not get any worse.
On a joking note ,its the dang banks power pack, your going so fast the paint is peeling right off!.
On a serious note,As you know the paints are base coat/clear coat and a dark shadow metalic is a pita to blend in.The reason its peeling is the chemical bond is failing between the base coat and the primer.Hopefully this the only spot ,but I seriously doubt it. Did it peel right to the primer or just the clearcoat peeling? Are you the only owner of the truck ? Maybe a repair has been done before and proper prep wasn't done in this area.
This not something the amature should try to fix with a spray can.
If you have the proper equiptment, yes you can try and I will give you the instruction.
I would suggest you take it to a bodyshop for a estimate.

Forty, it peeled right to the metal. I am the original owner and there has never been a repair anywhere on the body.
The funny thing is it is the same on both doors. It is located on the top/front edge of both doors in the area where door/roof/windshield meet. One thing that might be a clue is this area is where as you drive in the rain or use your wipers, the water/washer fluid runs off the windshield across the door and down and back of the side windows.
The peeling starts right where it meets the weather stripping of the cab.
Like I said I will take some pics of it tomorrow. I am a stickler for clean and pretty trucks so it is not neglect or lack of attention. I wash and wax many times a year and never noticed any precursers to this.
Then this sounds like a problem from the factory, primer adhesion .
so right now there is bare metal in this area? or what we call " e-coat".
If its metal don't wait too long to get it repaired.
Chk with your dealers body shop or a dealers boddyshop to see if Ford has had some issues with this before .You might get lucky and they have and might take care of you .
Its worth a shot.
This could be a sign of things to come ,the roof may start to peel completely.
Sorry I know you didn't want to here that but its true.
We saw things like this in the late 70's early 80's when these types of new paints were starting to come out.
I do remember paint issues back then. Funny, I remember them being grey that was most affected.
And yes, it is down to bare metal.
Maybe it is really time for a new one now . Staring new tires ($800) new brakes ($800) 60k miles service ($300) paint work ($500 maybe more if the problem continues)
I would take it to a body shop and have them inspect the area for any signs of repair ( a good body man can tell ).If there is take it back to the dealer and demand that it gets fixed. Very rarely will the factory paint peel all the way to bare metal.
I bought a new 77 Cougar and about 3 years in the passenger door started to surface rust when the body shop started to fix it it had been body filler in the door, when they looked closer they could see that the hole door had been repainted. I figured that it ether was damaged in transit of at the lot and that just did a fast repair and out the door.
boxcar ,in your first pic is that your shadow in the pic or is it a rust stain coming through the paint?
If its a rust stain then I would say that microscopic rust has been under the paint from the factory which caused the adhesion problem.
The point being that this is not a job for you to try and tackle.
As I said before I would take it to your dealer if he has a good size body shop there.
Just be nice and not demand things ! Demanding things usually gets me nowhere!
Try and explain how you take care of your truck and wash it and are finicky about it.
and see what happens.
Sometimes when you approach people with a good attitude it works!.

Forty, that is my shadow in the pic. It really surprised my how fast this happened. Really, in the last 1-2 months. I washed, clay bar, and waxed (2 coats) just before Thanksgiving. I ma kinda bummed about it. I do know I need to fix it asap. I have 3 more months of salt and sand to go through before spring.
