Redline on '78 351M?

I am looking at getting a tach installed in my '78, and I was wondering if anyone knew what the approximate redline of the stock motor was, so I can determine what range of rpm I should get on my tach!

Thanks, Matt

well most tach's come in 8000 or 11,000 rpm, think you'll be hitting 9000+ very often? with a 8000 rpm tach it'll have more room in the sweep so it'll be easier to see the rpm in my opinion

Matt probably 5500 is about it, maybe 6000. They just weren't made to turn that high. The stock Ford truck engine has left the power band by 4000. The standard 8 grand tach is about all you will ever need. I don't want my engine turning over 4000 rpms and with the 2.75 rear I suspect that would be much faster than my reflexes, or pucker power on the seat. :-)

Remember the Red Line is the point no return. If you consistently find your self over the Red Line things could start coming apart. Truck engines like the "M" series are extra heavy duty compared to the Windsor or Cleveland blocks and they make all the great low end torque from 1000 rpm up to 3500 rpm. If you want all that reciprocating mass to spin at 6000+ rpm it must be blueprinted and high speed balanced but then you defeat the purpose of a truck engine.

I've actually decided on a 6000 tach through another post.
I figure that will be good enough and make my tach easier to read!

Thanks!
