My rad has been recored before at least once, and is leaking again. Is it possible to upgrade my rad to a better unit for towing purposes while fitting my current fan shroud and not protrude above the rad support? (I don't have A/C)
As far as I can tell from my Haynes manual, there were three rads
available : standard cooling , a/c rad, and super cooling.
I am right in assuming that I have the standard cooling package? (the truck did come with tow package though I believe)
Would a super cooling rad up my cooling capacity and fit the way I want it?
Would my rad be a 2,3, or 4 row rad? what should I buy?
Should I look into an aluminum unit and can these be custom made at any rad shop?
Thanks!
Matt
Have you tried radiator.com? I havent used it, but it seems like a lot of people on the site have. I had problems with my radiator leaking/overheating for my 351m and got a new, 3 row radiator from a local radiator guy and it has been working great. Even loaded up the bed and took it on a long drive during the East Coast heat wave this past week and it did fine. Havent towed anything yet, but I suspect it would be alright for that as well. Running with a 160 degree thermostat now, but will probably change it back to a 195 when I get a chance because it seems to be running on the cool side now (not that I'm complaining!).
I just took mine to the local radiator shop and had a 4 row core installed in my tanks. Don't bother with any thing smaller. You might be able to find a complete unit on the net for the same price. Aluminum is good ( two long cores are enough) but expensive! Especially if you want one made to fit.

Jeg's is a dealer for Griffin rad (www.jegs.com). I looked into the alum 2 core and it was about an extra $100+ more than a new 4 row.
The super cooling package comes to about even with the front support and I measured mine at 5/8" from the hood when closed. this is also known as the desert cooling package and mine goes down into the frame at the bottom. It's a HUGE rad and I got a new inside attached to my used top and bottom tanks.
Karljay, what does your rad measure up to be?? Mine is as you described, down to the frame and up to the top of the rad support. Mine is 26 inches wide and 24 inches from top to bottom. (Mine is a stock 2 row I believe)
Anybody else have a cooling package that they know about and can tell me their dimensions?
LAST EDITED ON 17-Aug-01 AT 01:57 PM (EST)[p] If you added a 4 core to your tanks it would be exactly the same demensions except for about a 1/2" thincker than the three.
By the way, watch out for the lower radiator hose. There are a couple of different sizes depending on the radiator. If it rides on the corner of the oil pan it will eventually develop a pin hole leak which will wear away the pan gasket edge and desolve the sealant. Pain in but.

Well I just want to know if my truck has the supercooling option or not. I have recently refilled the rad twice, and don't think that it took 24 quarts (compared to the standard 15 quarts)to fill like the super cooling rad is supossed to!
Well the first time, I had to open the drain on the passenger side because there was an inline block heater attached there that I didn't want, and then I installed a plug, so it was drained fairly well.
Mine looks like 24 wide and 33 tall including the tanks. It sits down between the frame rails to about the bottom of the frame then up to 5/8" from the closed hood. I've seen two tank types, one is about the same thickness of the rad and the other is rounded and is taller and wider than the body of the rad.
I paid $80 for a 3 row then decided to find a 4 core and use the 3 row for the 68. The stock one on the 68 is much smaller, so going to the larger 3 row will be an upgrade. Overall, the large 4 row is well worth the extra few bucks. I can't imagine anyone having cooling problems with a rad that large.
If you call around, you'll find that they measure based on the core not counting the tanks.
I guess if you (karljay) have the super cooling radiator, then I don't, because as I said before, Mine is only 24 inches from top to bottom (and 26 wide).
It is still a pretty big rad, so hopefully having it recored to at least 3 row will more than handle my semi-frequent short towing trips!
