How do I go about disconnecting this heater (its hooked into the heater core supply line) (much like a tractor block heater) Its actually the same heater as on our John Deere tractors (looks cylinder shaped)
Would the return line to the engine be to a freeze hole? Would a freeze hole plug plug up my problem?
How do I ensure that there are no air pockets in the cooling system after letting coolant leak out?
LAST EDITED ON 03-Aug-01 AT 11:45 PM (EST)[p]just disconnect the heater hose off the water pump and heater core and replace that hose or you could half acidly splice it together, or do you have one of those gay "y" shaped things in there ?
also no freeze plug can be tapped as in threaed to accept a npt thread
The heater has never been needed in the last 23 years, even in cold Canadian winters, as the truck is always garage kept.
If a heater is ever required, I will just install a normal block heater that is much nicer on the eyes!
Thanks guys!
So a pipe plug eh? OK!
Do I need to look out for air pockets in the cooling system while disconnecting any coolant lines or is this not a problem as long as I don't ewmpty the rad too much??
Matt, If you don't have any use for the heater at all, just make a short loop from the pump to the intake so the circut is complete and forget everything else. No need to worry about air.

In the cool still quiet of night you can hear chevies rusting away.
You shouldnt have to worry about air in the cooling system but to be sure when you finish the job and add coolant just leave the radiator cap off and start the truck, then wait untill the thermostat opens, if you have any air it will bubble out then.
Weld, what is a 'normal' block heater ? I would like some kind of heater for my truck but the place we go for vacations has no electricity (western U.P. Michigan) Might you be thinking about a thermotop? DF
