i just installed my hellwig rear sway bar on my 2001 4X4 limited yea i got jipped too i came with hitch and wiring but no rear bar anyway $220 and 3 hours later(messing around) it was done! i could notice a difference in a corner! i have not had my x very long so i didn't get to pull my 34 ft. trailer before the bar install? now to my question, right! in the instructions on installation i it said to cut off the tie rod ends to make adjustments. okay! they never said what was too loose or too tight or what to look for! i did not cut anything but i am concerned about the adjustment i do not want to tear it up and the tie rods will be the first go if frame bolts do not fail first. i have priced billstein shocks but the monroes seemed to working fine

My Hellwig was not adjustable it had fixed links. If I remember right, with the adjustable link type, adjust length of the links so the sway bar is as close to parallel to the ground as possible.
Don't know if you are aware that the Excursions have a problem with drifting. Feels like a front end or sway problem. It's actually in the rear end. The rear springs are softer that the superduty. This causes spring wrap which in turn causes the rear of the vehicle to steer. Do a search for Landyot's radius rods. This guy makes these radius rods in his garage and they completely eliminate the spring wrap problem. They are very well made and very high quality! If you are towing a 34' TT, you should really consider them. When I took my first trip with my 31' TT, it was just plain frightening! I was all over the road, and when trucks pass look out! The Hellwig will probably cure about 20% of handling problem, radius rods 80%.
The guy usually does 2 production runs a year (just does it in his spare time). You can get on a waiting list, if you want contact info pm me and I will get it to you. Hope this helps some.
You guys are beginning to scare me. I don't plan on pulling my 30'TT until May. I wanted to see how it pulls before I start fixing problems that I might not have. Then on the other hand, if I do have a problem, it will take some time to get the sway bar and the radius rods if I need them.

I would take it on a drive now if you can, just to see how it does. It's no fun trying to get things done right before a trip.

I did have 2 sway bars on trailer, it's about 6000 lbs. or so, fairly light. I usually tow at reasonable speeds, 60-68 mph. If you have any wind, you will know it in a big way, especially if you are passed by a truck. It will get really squirrelly fast. I was behind a friend of mine who also tows with an X, he got between two trucks and nearly lost control. It was like watching a train wreck. We were towing trailers for FEMA, and they were not equipped with trailer sway bars, but still shouldn't have been that out of control. I had tried to talk him into radius rods before that and he didn't think he needed them, he sure wants them now! I can honestly say the radius rods were the best investment I have made in this truck!
Not sure about smoking, is yours a v10 or diesel? It might help if you filled out your signature with all your info, then everyone will know exactly what you have.

No, not confusing sway/load bars, I was just trying to answer your questions. Didn't mean to imply the sway bars and weight had anything to do with each other.
