How difficult is it to install a Hellwig

I bought a Hellwig rear sway bar for my 01 Ex. How difficult is the installation? is it just a matter of bolting it on or are there some particular adjustments that need to be made? Thanks!

I was wondering the same thing also. I just bought an '04 X and am having the Roadmaster Active Suspension put on and was thinking of adding the Hellwig at the same time. The installer likes the RAS so much he said that I would not need the rear sway bar but I'm not so confident. I leave on a trip with my 28' TT in about 3 weeks and don't want any surprises.

the instructions that come with it REALLY stink....best i can help you with is this...

i made an adjustment after taking this picture..there are sleeves around the end links...i cut them and the end link threaded rod to make the bar parallel with the truck frame..it's a bit of a puzzle, but overall the install is easy...make sure you use the locking nuts anywhere you don't want something falling apart..LOL

What kinda ride difference did you get with the airbags, where did you get them from and for how much?

With my experience with air bags is even empty they squeak and the ride is stiffer.

I found a site where someone documented their installation of the Hellwig Sway Bar along with shocks on their Ex. Click -> HERE <-

I put one on my Ex and I really like the improvement. The directions that come with it make the install quite easy. Very good directions and easy to follow. One of the easiest things to do to help with handling. Just remember to retighten after a week of driving it. You'll like the difference it makes. I used two 1/2" ratchets when tightening the nuts seamed to work the best. It probably will take about 2 hours from start to finish.
Good Luck
Jeff

Take alook at the link I provided (Above) and it appears that you must jack the truck up.

I installed mine with OUT jacking up the truck...

A couple of things I ran into when installing mine.

The new U-Bolts are 1/2". The ones I took off my '05 were 3/8"...I had to drill out the stock shock mount to accept this larger U-Bolt.

I unbolted my shocks from the shock mount that goes around the axle...I got tired of fighting with the shock mount while trying to compress the shock and line up the U-Bolt...so I gave up and simply unbolted the shocks from the lower mount and then re-bolted the shock mount to the axle with the new U-Bolt and then re-installed the lower shock/bolt.

Thanks X_Hemi! Just what I needed to know.

Stugpanzer, I saw those pictures but didn't know if he jacked up the truck because he had to, or ease of install.

Joe, I wish I would have thought of that, I fought with that shock and mount for over an hour. Sometimes I am an idiot.

Anyway, I like the Hellwig, but the RAS made a much larger difference.

The order I'd do the install would be this...

- Unbolt STOCK shocks top and bottom.
- Install Hellwig
- Install Bilsteins (rears will be banded...keep them banded until installed)
- Install RAS

I put it in that order because...I had my RAS on and it raised the rear of the Ex by ~1.25"...which fought me to get the shocks on in a banded state...I was afraid to RELEASE the new shocks until bolted...after I cut the band and the expanded 1/8" with GREAT FORCE...I knew I had made the RIGHT decision!
