I have an 86 f350 W/ a tired 6.9. Dont run the truck hard so I want to swap to a 351w from a 83 f250 (carburated). Am i in for any suprises? Has anyone done a swap like this? Any help or advice would be appriciated.
Mike
I am in the process of doing almost the exact same thing except I'm using Mustang fuel injection for air/fuel delivery. You'll have to get some frame mounts for the 351W. They should line up with holes in the frame right behind the cross member, if not you may have to drill some holes. What kind of tranny does your F350 have? My F250 had a T19. If this is the case for you, you'll need a bellhousing and a different slave cylinder for the clutch. I am right now trying to figure out what to do about a cooling fan, whether to go electric or if a clutch fan will line up with the diesel fan shroud good enough to work. Let me know about any specific questions, I may be able to help you out. Maybe you can help me out with mine.
Im planing to use the trans in that is attached to the 351 (another 4 speed). I have the complete doner truck so I assume I can get the mounts from it. My main concern is the wiring harness. I dont have a fan shrould now so I'm thinking the big diesel radiator will will take care of the little small block, maybe with an aftermarket shrould.Im not sure about the hydraulic clutch but I may move the manual one from the older truck. Im trying to nurse the 6.9 along till spring as Im hauling firewood every weekend.
I believe the only wiring you'll need is the Duraspark ignition wiring. If you have a manual that shows wiring diagrams you should be able to figure out where you can splice in the Duraspark wiring. Of course, you could remove the whole wiring harness for the diesel in the engine compartment and under the dash and swap in the complete wiring harness from the 83 donor truck. Other than the wiring harness it sounds like it should be a standard swap of removing the 6.9 and tranny and installing the 351 and tranny after you swap in the frame mounts. Hope the 6.9 holds out long enough for you.
If you guy's want to sell the Diesel engine, I'm looking for a rebuilder. The 460 in the F-350 is on it's last leg and would rather have an older diesel.
The carbed motor's have very few wires to deal with, so it should be an easy swap imo.
I'll give MDR the first chance to sell since he started this thread. But I am willing to sell my old 6.9. Actually you may have caught me just in time, I have been getting ready to put a lot of the "valuable" parts of the engine and other parts on Ebay. Make sure you understand one thing before we get too far in the process, the right side (passenger side) head gasket is blown on my engine. It blew in Sept of last year and I changed both head gaskets and ran it for about two weeks and it started to act up again, and eventually blew again. I would guess that I either have a warped head or block??? Let me know if you are still interested after MDR says whether he wants to sell his 6.9. One more point of interest, I noticed you are in FL. I am going to be in Melbourne in about a week and half for about a week. I have a trailer to be able to bring it down to FL and meet you in that time frame.
Make your deal fellows. I'm not going to be doing any thing for a few months (hopefully ?).Thanks for the input on the wiring. I've been poking around under the dash and hood. Dosn't look near as complicated as the newer trucks.
On another note, this truck weighs @8700 lb empty. The previous owner found a deal on 1/4 "plate steel when the dump bed got weak.I plan on a new flat bed in the furture. My question is, will the 351w pull the weight around untill I can lighten things up? Is anyone running a 351w in a one ton dump, pulling a trailer, ect.?
MDR, I believe Ford put 351Ws in F350s from the factory. Of course, that's not saying it would be ideal. Are you planning to rebuild/modify the 351W? I am swapping in a 351W stroked to 392 with a mild cam and stock heads w/ large valves. I would think that if you plan on rebuilding and/or modifying you should be OK.

Johnsonswamp, if you are still interested in my 6.9, let me know. I will most likely be leaving for Florida on Fri./Sat., Feb. 3rd/4th. Send me a message or email if you'd like.
