96 explorer no 4 wheel drive
Hello I have a 1996 Ford Explorer 4.0 liter that the four wheel drive is acting up. If you shift to 4 wheel auto while moving there is nothing. If you shift 4wd Auto while stopped it comes on then goes to 2wd after about 1 mile down road and I get the 4wd and 4wd low lights flashing before it kicks out. I am going to look at the transfer case motor when it thaws out under chassis ( Michigan snow). any hints or directions to take would be helpful. This is my first electronic shift 4wd always had manual hubs and transfer case. I never had any problems with them and I was hesitate about buying a electronic shift Thanks Todd

It is probably one of the hall sensors which are located on the transfer case. One is behind the ele. shift motor and the other is over the rear output shaft. Some people have had luck just pulling the sensors and cleaning them but I didn't. I replaced the shift motor and both sensors with Ford replacement parts and I think the bill was around $265.00 for all three. There are alot of places that carry the shift motors cheaper. You may also get by with just changing the hall sensors, they are not very expensive at all. You can do a search of the threads in this forum and get alot of different ideas on what to do.
