4wd Issues

A few weeks ago, I was trying to pull out a buddy who was stuck. I had someone spotting the chain from a distance, but noticed that my front tires were not spinning when I had it in 4wd. I am running a 2001 F250 SD with the 5.4L V8. When you shift the 4wheel drive, you hear the diffs. click and pop as they go into place, and it sounds normal. I have auto locking hubs, and have not taken them off to inspect them. Do you think I blew the transfer case or could it be a electronic problem? I have the electronic shift on the fly thing, wish I had the manuel 4wd shifter. Any help would be apprectiated. Thanks.

I would say the auto hubs... everyone complains the autos lose vacum and such. i'd check them first.

If you think it is the transfer case an easy way to check is to put it in 4 wheel and see if the front shaft spins.

The front shaft, where would that be located underneath of the truck. I would assume it would be right by the transfer case? I am a real rookie, sorry. Thanks.

Look through the drivers front wheel well, its right there.

Thanks, I'll have to try and look into that tommorow when the monsoon freaking stops. Anyways, would it be wise to replace the auto locking hubs on my truck with like warn manuel locking hubs ? If so what are the best brands for this ?

Warn hubs are the best get the premium ones..

Is it possible to blow the transfer case by trying to pull someone out of the mud, I know it must put a huge amount of strain on the truck, but would this, or could it, cause the transfer case to blow?

I think if you toasted a transfer case you'd have a few more symptoms like horrible noises - even when in 2wd. I can't remember the numbers but I think the transfer cases in these trucks is rated for a ungoddly ammount of torque. I bet you'd toss a front drive shaft or grenade a hub before a t' case.
