My son's '94 Bronco failed to start 4 days ago. When turning the key the solenoid made a clicking noise. I picked up a new one at Pep Boys (I didn't look at the truck until sunday), installed it and the truck started right up. I just got a call from him and it failed to start and is making the same noise - according to him. What could make a solenoid go bad in a few days? Bad part? Something else? All suggestions are appreciated.
I had the same problem on my 1995 bronco. I turned out that it was the solenoid on my brand new starter. That fixed the problem. It costs $40 but that was better than replacing the starter again. Good luck
try to clean the wires on the starter and solenoid...i had the same problem too on my truck the solenoid on starter was rusted bad and broke the stud that wire was attached ..got new starter no problems now
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to try cleaning all connections. If that doesn't work I'll try hitting the relay to see if that shocks it into working, then try arcing it. If all that fails, I'll take it out and return it to the store and try a new one. Can arcing the two main bolts cause any other problems?
Is there anyway to bypass the solonoid? I have had to put three in mine and it always seems to break while im in the woods. I tried to bypass it and it doesnt work just makes the same damn clicking noise.
I've put 4 in my 82'. You can try to bypass it by puttin a screw driver over the 2 connections. I just found myself one that worked and it has now for about a year. Check all the connection too. Other than that good luck and its a good thing thee things are rather cheap, but 4-5 of them does add up
Thanks for all the input. According the receipt, Pep Boys warranties them for 12 months or 12,000 miles. Guess I'll find out how good of a guarantee it is when I return the one I put in a few days ago. However, I just found out that the key ignition allows the key to be pulled out at any position in the turning radius. When I went to the truck I found the radio on because my son haphazardly took out the key while the ignition switch was one click back from running – not all the way off. So I’m going to charge the battery first to make sure that is not the problem.
my ignition lock does the same thing it can be a good or bad thing, i've found myself pulling the key out and running in the 7 11 for a pack of smokes, only problem is you cant turn it all the way off if you dont have the right key
My Tempo clicked and acted like it had solenoid problems too. It ended up being the connections. Dirty corroded battery connections or starter wire connects suck up alot of power and then all you hear is the magnet in the solenoid actioning it.
Dwoodler, kinda funny that I read your post this morning. Last night I put the fully charged battery back into the truck, turn the key and click - nothing. I then figure that I'll take out the solenoid and return it. That took no time, I turn the key and click - nothing. OK, I grab a big screw driver and climb under the truck to arc the starter to see if it's working. Not seeing the two bolts I expected to see to arc, I banged on the starter a couple of times and thought I would do the same on the relay mounted to the starter. I took off the heat shield - the small wire connection is very dirty, so I made sure it was able to make a connection. Turned the key again and started right up! It started agin this morning - guess I'll have to get under there and clean all the connections. Thanks to everyone who helped me out. It's great to have a site like this one to discuss various issues with my trucks.
