Temp Change

hey guys. i was thinking about switching to a 10w-30 when summer rolls around.

i currently run 5w30 trop artic syn blend 3k oci in my 03 ranger 4.0 sohc w/ 42,000mi on the clock. factory specs call for 5w30, despite the dealerships trying to put 5w20 in these trucks (but now im back to changing my own oil again). i dont remember if ford recmds. 10w30 for summer or not? what do yall think?

im wondering if it would be best to stick w/ 5w30 year round or not...

Well I see your in the upper mid west, so I'd stay with the 5W-30.

UNLESS you tow, or haul, or run the freeway at high speeds on long trips, or do a lot of off roading, then mybe you'd want to consider a specified in weight synthetic.

I now run 5W-30 synthetic Havoline with Motorcrafts filter, because I live & tow in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the truck sits outside 24/7, it's cold in the winter & hot in the summer, so either way my engine & oil get stressed pretty good.

Running 10W-30 verses 5W-30 in summer isn't going to do anything for the engine after it gets warmed up, as both are 30 weight at temperature.

The 5W will flow faster & lube quicker on cold starts, so thats the way to go, to cut down on start up wear in the engine & on the starter motor & battery too, as they don't have to work as hard to crank the engine. IMHO.

Stick with a quality 5w30 oil. The 10w30 won't hurt, but both of these oils are made to run clean and "hot" in modern engines. Also, the 5w30 oil lets the bottom part of your engine, (crankshaft, mains, rods, etc.) run much more efficiently = more power + MPG. Think about those thicker viscosities, much more bottom end friction to overcome, escpecially at start up, and during the warm-up cycle. If your engine is tight, you'll be fine with 5w30, 10w30 in the summer, if you must. 5w30 is good year-around. I use 5w30 in a month or so of 100+ degree temps in July, August, with never any problems. Ed
