Stupid question time...

I have 7 qts of 10W-30 full synthetic sitting in my garage. Right now I'm in below freezing temps but plan to be in the south quite a bit in the summer.

Is it ever okay to use this 10W-30 instead of the 5W-30 the hood sticker indicates?

It's actually recommended to use 5w-20 now in the modular engines.

Oops... I typed V10, but must have deleted it thinking it was a redundancy of the 10W. Also it's a 2000 4X4 Limited with 125k on it.

That makes sense. You'd be short about 7 or 8 quarts and it would be different oil and viscosity.

If 10W30 means the viscosity is at 10W when the engine is cold and 30 when the engine is hot, then I could get away with it for a thousand miles or so I think. That should be all I have to go before we leave for our big trip and we will have budgeted to have all necessary maintenance done then.

I was looking at my dip stick and its black and low. That wouldn't be surprising if I hadn't just paid to have it changed... I actually paid to have ALL fluids changed. Diffs tranny and all. This makes me wonder what else didn't get done right. My coolant was almost a gallon low, and my tranny fluid was to high, but
I don't know how much an inch on that stick indicates.

Basically I have this oil sitting here from a car I sold before I did the change in it and have no other use for it.

Can't you try and get rid of it on CL? Just because it's there doesn't mean you gotta put it in the Ex

I wouldn't put that in my V10 Engine. It's thicker especially when it's cold.
Cost of 7 quarts of oil aren't worth any possible engine issue. IMHO

I'm just going to buy some 5W20 when I go to get a filter.

Any opinions on that? Syn or no? Filter brand or oil brand?

As closure to the oil question what I did was changed the oil with the stuff I had lying in the garage first. Then I ran it up and down a hilly highway. After that I drained the synthetic oil, changed the filter, put the oil and folter recomended by sammie0126, and installed a lazy change plug. I'm glad I 'rinsed' with the synthetic oil because it was almost black after just a mile or two.

New stupid question

New stupid question:

Can I get a PTO on my transmission? I think I have an r100.

I'd like to be able to run a winch or maybe a generator off it in the future.
