Making Your Own Tow Package??

Just got a new 2005 F150 Screw and it doesn't have the factory tow package on it. I need to pull a car and trailer back and forth to the dragstip safely. I've already got the hitch installed. What else should I do or what else has everyone else done to tow. Also... what's the easiest way to add electric traile brakes to my new truck??

I think that all trucks with AC come with the larger radiator so all you need to add is a tranny cooler and whatever type of connector you need for your trailer lights. I don't have any experience with electric brakes so I can't help you there.

Thumbs up How to make your own tow package

I pull an 18 foot Keystone Springdale that weighs about 4000lbs fully loaded. I used to pull it with my 92 F150 2wd, 3.55, 302 5.0. To do this I too had to make my own tow package.

1. Upgrade rear shocks (if desired) to heavy duty shocks.
2. Add tranny cooler
3. Add class IV or greater hitch.
4. Add brake controller (Not hard to add but I had local RV dealer do this part for about $60 in labor and saved me ALOT of time)

Viola! your ready to pull.

I still have the ole' '92 and she pulls just as good as my 04 SC 4.6 2wd 3.55 with a factory tow package.

fordman,

the extra cooling radiator is by option only. the a/c trucks still have the standard cooling.

The brake controller only comes on the F250. The F150 trailer package consists of a class IV hitch, radiator upgrade, 9 channel aux trans cooler, 7pin wiring harness, 72Amp Hr heavy duty battery ( Ford 2005 RV @ tailer towing guide pub# RV-VER7254-0804). This is the optional trailer tow package that gets you to max tow capability for your rear and engine size.

we know the factory brake controller is only in superduties, but these trucks do come with the brake wiring for a aftermarket controller.

I also bought my 04' S-crew with no factory hitch. When I took it to have it installed I found out that it was already pre-wired for the brake controller. Just plug it in under the dash. I then had to purchase the 7 pin connector and wire loom that plugs in up by the spare tire. Bought both pieces from the local dealer for $77. Everything plugged right in and worked great no problems yet.

The only problem with just adding thwe hitch, your tow capacity is limited to the same weight as as stock unit with non of the other upgrades. Just putting on a hitch does not provide you the upper tow weights.
