Those are 2 different motors you're talking about there; unless you have a really bored-out 351! There is a 351M, or a 400M. The 351M has 351ci displacement, and the 400M has a 400ci displacement.

Hey 78orange:
I don't think there is much difference between the number of horses for the two engines. Because of smog stuff, it depends on in what part of the country it was sold and the trucks GVW but I think its around 150 hp average, give or take a few. Not much for what little MPG you will get.
Why do you ask?
and
Is your truck Factory Orange?

Thanks, its a 351 cleveland modified to a 400cid, i really dont think it is running at 150 cause it has a lot of power.. and the only modification i have on it is headers, and it was bought in west tennessee, and the trucks factory color is poppy red, but we call it orange.

The 351 before the (C)leveland refers to the cid, so, you either have a modified 351, with a longer stroke or a larger bore, or both. There is no such thing, that i've ever heard of/read about/seen/heard anyone on this site talk about, as a 351 with a cubic inch displacement of 400! Do some checking, find out what engine you actually DO have, and get back to us ;-)

a modified cleveland is different than a (c)
the 351 M's ran taller deck height, A windsor crankshaft, and ran big chamber 2bbl style cleveland heads.
400's are identical to the 351M's except they have .5" longer stroke.
it is possible to put a 400 crankshaft into a 351 Cleveland but the mains would have to be turned down.
YOure old man says its a modified 351 cleveland displacing 400 cubic inch.
that is a 400M its similar but different from the mighty cleveland as i just said.
390GT (aka Brent) remember, unless its a GT its just a hunk of iron

So, what you're saying, is that SOMEONE SAID it's a 400, and that IT LOOKS LIKE a 351C?! Why don't you go look at the engine, and describe it to us. Things like: how many valve cover bolts there are, what the timing cover looks like, where the thermostat housing is, how the intake manifold meets up with the heads. Also look for some casting #'s, on the heads, manifolds, block, anything! Just make sure you get your facts straight, FOR SURE, before you come back swearing by the skin of your teeth that someone said, and it looks to be...
Don't take this the wrong way, I'm just trying to help you the best I can ;-)

I'm going to try to somehow tie this all together. The 400 first came out in '71 and was a derivation of the 351C. To get the increase in cubes, the stroke was increased by ½ inch which required a revised block with a 1-inch taller deck height, longer rods and longer stroke crank with larger main bearings (a stroked 351 Windsor crank). Even though it was (and is) the only 400, sometimes it was referred to as the 400C initially in some publications (not Ford) and was factory rated at 290 H.P. There even was a factory listing for a 4V version but they must have axed it or made a mistake because it never came out. In '72 and later the 400 ratings fell to around 160-170 H.P depending upon the application. The 361M didn't appear until '75 and was a derivation of the 400. The stroke was decreased back ½ inch but still used the taller 400 block, long rods and large main bearing crank but with a shorter stroke (the old 351 Windsor crank). Ratings for this engine varied around 150-160 H.P. depending upon the application. Hope I helped and not made things worse.
