400cid horsepower
If you only post some casting #'s, then we can tell you for sure. If you KNOW it's a 400cid, then it's probably a 400M, the only 400 (I think) Ford ever made. And from reading these posts, then this would look pretty much like the Cleveland engines...
Some of these engine gurus can probably tell you what it is by the description I asked for earlier...and sorry if I wasn't clear, but they would need to know where the thermostat housing is in comparison to the water pump.
So, to tell for sure, we would need some casting numbers, a very detailed description, or someone might be able to tell you what you have by what kind of car it came out of.
Sorry if I came off sounding rude, sometimes my fingers go faster than my mind :-)

I wouldn't worry about sounding rude. After all you are trying to help this guy, and he's the one that's not listening to what you guys are asking him for.

Everybody here was trying to help you, and you just went ballistic. You never said you were rebuilding another 400. If you would have said that I am sure these guys could have told you. But there is no need to go off and throw a temper tantrum about it.

We cannot help you if you won't accept the help that is being offered...Remember, YOU ASKED. Don't ask a question and then come back all hot-headed and closed-minded. We can't help you if you don't help us.
Enough ranting for now,

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
You will find that generaly we try hard to help folks that come seeking it. Most of the guys here are really knowledgeable about trucks, and I hope this introduction to our family doesn't cause you to want to drive a chevy.

In the still cool hours of the night, you can hear chevys rusting away.
Didn't sound like you were picking on him, you have to give to get. A little descriptive info would have allowed ya'all to be on the money with the proper answer. Ah well juveniles, I have a house full of them. I can't understand the ones I have. He needs to finish school and maybe he will have a new attitude.
Keep up the good work all.......

anyhoo if you read some previous posts about your engine, the 400 or the 351m you'll get the same thing..dont bother wasting your time on it....go with a 460 in it.
Youre truck may seem pretty powerful because they do produce torque but you'll find once youve gotten behind the wheel of a truck with a 460 it makes the 400 seem pretty weak...Ive driven both..i just got rid of my 85 3/4ton with a 460
i could pull the @$$ end off of a 400.
but thats my opinion..and ppl on here know how i feel about the 351m/400's.
Boy you sure caused a ruckus when you asked how much horse power a 400 has. That's nothin'. A while ago a fella asked what FE meant and you should have seen the heat over that one.
Stick around here, there are a lot of experienced guys that know what they are talken about (and some that just talk).
As far as your 400. As you can tell the answer to your simple horsepower question can be very complicated. Your perception of engine horsepower can be affected by many factors ie; gear ratio, type of trans and its gear ratio, GVW, tire size and many other things.
I drove one stock, and one not so stock, 400m engines for a total of 500k. They were dependable and served me very very well, however I decided my next one would be 460, but that's me. Whatever YOU decide to do keep us posted, that's how we ALL learn.
Especially if you can figure out how to make a 400 or 351,
M,
C,
FE,
CID,
XYZ,
high thermostat,
low thermostat,
tall or short valve covers with 8 or ten bolts
and 4 or 6 fan blades
REALLY WORK FOR THE MONEY,
I for one would be impressed and interested.
Poppy red? Sounds like a color for my daughters Honda, not sompthin' for a ground pounder......... Just kidding.
