I have a '63 unibody that I'm stripping down for painting and I have a question about the moulding. It looks like the moulding is attached in some places with nuts and other places with some sort of clip. I'm not worried about the ones with nuts, but the clip ones I'm worried about tearing them out because I don't want to not be able to replace them....if I pop them out, can they be put back in? If not, does somebody sell the ones for 61-64? (I've found the ones for 65-66 but wasn't sure if they are the same...)
As long as you don't break the clips off the back they can be reused. You just have to be very careful. If you do break them check LMC or even your local Ford dealer. They may have them or can get them. I have gotton a couple parts like that from Ford. Good luck
The trim on a 63 Unibody is one year only trim and rare. The clips may be able to be matched up with a body supply house parts bins.
Carefull is the word when taking it off. Avoid bending or denting as you take it off and store it inside long cardboard tubes. Carpet rolls work great.
Is there a special trick to getting the trim off? Do the retainers disintegrate or is it just hard to get them out without ruining their ability to hold the trim on?
Ford used a sheet metal retainer and nylon. I have found thet they tupically break and need to be replaced after corrosion and UV take the toll.
They are hard to get out and keep in decent shape. There is a suupplier near pittsburg PA the sells at the spring and fall carisile event that has about every trim clip ever used.
I have also found a decent collection of trim clips at NAPA
I would replace the clips. if there is a little corrosion it will just continue and make stains on new paint.
Do you know the name of the supplier? I'm over here in the west and the chances of me getting to PA are pretty slim...
NAPA as in the auto parts store? It would seem kind of silly for Ford to change trim clips year after year....why wouldn't trim clips from other pickup years fit my '63? I can understand the trim being different, but the clips??
The closest would be the '64. From pictures I've seen, the '64 seems to have very similar trim to the '63. But maybe not the same clips....? Maybe they would work...?
That probably wouldn't help me much, though, because I haven't seen sources for the '64 clips either....
Basically, I just didn't want to have to jerry-rig it. I can easily rip off the trim and try to find something that will work when I put it back on, but I didn't want to take the chance that I couldn't get the things to stick back on and stay on tightly....
Thanks for your help....this forum has helped me a LOT during the 6 years I've had this pickup....
Barry can you post some part numbers from the manuals?
Garbz
OK....here are the part numbers in my book:
Group 290B82 - Retainer - Door Outside Moulding (C3AZ 62290B82-A
66, 81 (F100/F250) Door - 2
66, 81 (F100/F250) Cowl Side - 2
Group 29120 - Retainer - Body Side Outside Moulding (C3AZ 6229120-A)
66, 81 (F100/F250) Cowl Side - 2
66, 81 (F100/F250) Door - 8
66 (F100/F250-122" W/B) (my truck) - 26
I'm not sure what the difference between those retainers are but they're both listed in the book.
Also, I just bought a (supposed) 1963 retainer off eBay and the guy listed the part number as C3TZ-8129316-A. I'm not sure why the number is different (although the C3TZ indicates to me that it's for a '63) and why that group (29316) is not in my parts book.
