Difference in synthetic?

Iv'e read alot of posts about the rottella 5w-40 and decided to try it, afterwards( and $70 later ) I really couldn't tell any difference in idling, start up, etc. I don't notice anything bad about it just nothing different. Except now when I start in the mornings it "romps" a few times before reaching normal rpm's. I was using regular Castrol 15-40 before with no problem.

Is it just me or is synthetic alittle over-glamourized?

I was never sold on synthetic, but wanted to give it a try. Walmarts around here dont carry Rotella 5-40, so I just got the regular 15-40 change. I had added lucas on my last change and my truck really didnt like it. It did the "romp romp romp" and just seemed a little off. After changing oil at 4k instead of the usual 5k, it runs like a champ again. No romping and doesnt take so long to warm up. I think I am going to stick with just plain jane regular 15-40. Additives and synthetics have yielded different results for different people. I strongly believe in STP on gassers, but my truck just seems to like the regular 15-40. The next thing I am gonna give a try is the Blue CPS.

Yes, synthetics are overglamourized in my opinion.

But 5w-40 does help mine on cold starts (10* ambient temp and below).
Other than that, I don't feel synthetics offer any benefit over a good 15w-40.

oh dear... not this can of worms again...! guys.. it's simple... it's your mule, it's your money... there ARE differences between a REAL syn oil and dino oil... i KNOW my mule runs better on Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w40... it is diesel rated syn... and for the number of times i have to change my oil, i do not mind spending the extra money... there is increased protection to the turbo with syn... kwik can explain that better than i can... anyway... use what you like, but understand... there is a difference... the real question is wether or not that difference will make a difference in the life of your mule... that question is open to debate, and i don't know that you could prove that one way or another...

better stock up on the old t&s while you can. mobil has stopped shipment of it until feb 5th. they are now renaming it and calling it turbo diesel oil and it will now have the high price tag of delvac1. so gone are the days where you could get 5 quarts for 20.25 at walmart. it will be about the same as the mobil EP which is 27.95

Synthetic oil is supposed to be slipperier, more stable, and tolerant of higher temperatures. I've seen a couple of dyno tests that say you gain 3-8 horsepower, run a touch cooler, and should have less engine wear. The motorcycle guys agree.

I know what the difference in synthetic oil is, I'm just saying I noticed none of the drastic results that some people were reporting ie; blah blah blah, you know what I'm talking about.

Yup. Never believe the advertising campaign. Look for the guys who said they thought it was BS, or the magazines like carcraft that decided to check it out. Two or three of those will usually give you a reliable answer.

If you believe the advertising you can turn a 225hp 289 into a 350 hp(with 45 mpg) monster for about $200.
Mod Cost HP Gain
Base 0 225
K&N filter 40 25
Tornado 35 15
electric supercharger 85 45
Fual atomizer 40 10%
Totals 200 341

In reality all the mods above are good for about 10 hp. For the same price buy a K&N filter and cam kit. You'll get about 35hp, assuming you have a muscle car with the wimpy cam. Oh, and 16mpg.

exactly. but some people have had bad results running synthetic. Like me, my buddies truck has a noticeable difference when he adds lucas to his oil. When i did it to mine, i had completely different results

Different strokes for different folks.. All I can say, is find what makes your girl HAPPY and stick with it.

Mine likes the regular stuff...

I read responses like, "no noticeable difference in performance" etc. Don't expect a seat of the pants horespower gain when switching to synthetics. It's what you don't see or feel that counts.

Most all synthetic oils are better than dino juice. Less varnish deposits over time, able to handle extreme heat conditions, etc. without breaking down, which is a big plus in our oil lubricated turbo'd PSD's.

Lot's out there to read up on.

You must ask yourself if it's worth it to run it?
