I read responses like, "no noticeable difference in performance" etc. Don't expect a seat of the pants horespower gain when switching to synthetics. It's what you don't see or feel that counts.
Most all synthetic oils are better than dino juice. Less varnish deposits over time, able to handle extreme heat conditions, etc. without breaking down, which is a big plus in our oil lubricated turbo'd PSD's.
Lot's out there to read up on.
You must ask yourself if it's worth it to run it?
exactly... well said... i noticed a little smoother idling, but an oil change will do that anyway.... so HeatStroked has it exactlly right... it's the differences you don't see or hear that are important... and deciding if syn oil is what's in your truck is up to you... i FIRMLY believe that the MOST important part of the engine is the oil... it lubricates, it cools, it runs the injectors, and it protects the turbo from EXTREME HEAT... use whatever you want, but my mule will ALWAYS have syn oil in it...
"Because the injection system uses unfiltered oil directly from the pan , it makes total sense to use the very best synthetic motor oil after break-in. High quality synthetic lubricants can tolerate much higher temperatures without coking or breaking down. The best synthetic oils also keep the engine clean by being able to dissolve deposits and keep them safely in suspension to be filtered out or removed at drain time. It is a good idea to install a bypass oil filter on these engines. A fine bypass filter slowly filters the oil to remove particles as small as 2 microns. The full flow filter lets particles below 20 to 30 microns stay in the oil. It is the particles between 5 and 30 microns that are responsible for most of the wear on HEUI injectors and engines. Adding bypass oil filtration, in addition to the normal full flow oil filter, will get rid of these small particles, which would otherwise accumulate in the motor oil to become the cause of wear and failures."
I had problems with my "somewhat" modified 390 fe, a bit older than what some of you seem to be running...running hot was an accepted thing with me while breaking in with regular oil. After about 5 oil changes I switched to Mobil 1,and noticed a drop in engine temp.,not a lot,but enough to notice.I felt that was saying something, maybe nothing but I use synthetic still with a dual filter set up,a high perf. with a bypass buddy. WE (my truck and I) like it.
Where I have noticed the most difference in using synthetics is in transmission oil. I use M1 ATF for my zf 6sp and it is definitely quieter and smoother shifting especially when cold. As for engine oil, I mixed syn with rotella and noticed a faster start up in the mornings when cold. Other than that, no way to tell until turbo is torn down to see if regular oil has done its job. So until that happens, yeah regular oil will do for me in the engine department.
