2001 F 250 SD crew 4x4 7.3. Towing consist of a large pontoon with fixed hardtop ( pulls like a billboard down the road)and a 30 ft travel trailer thruout the summer. I thought I seen that adding a trans cooler is a great idea. But dont the 7.3 have its own and if so is that idea just insurance??

Yes u have an OEM cooler but it's definitely insufficient. A cool tranny is a happy tranny.
yes, yes, yes. i have adding a 24,000 lb cooler and it is just adaquate for my pulling my trch camper and boat. when i get my fifth wheel (i will be double towing that and the boat) i am going to swap in a 6.0 cooler for the stock 7.3 air to fluid cooler

You need to get a tranny temp gauge and if the temp's get over 200 degrees at any one time, than you need a extra cooler..I find even with my tru-cool, my temps get a little over 200 when pulling my RV trailer up some logging roads, using lower gears, making the converter work harder and generating more heat.. Check out "Geno's Garage". They have a dip stick trans temp gauge which is easy to install and works great..
Tru-cool Max is the only way to go. Mine is rated for 40,000lbs, and is run in series with my stock cooler. Never see 190 pulling my large 5er in mid summer up hills here in AZ. NOW THAT IS A COOLER!!!!!
