hello and thank you ahead of time for any advice/help ok i have a 96 taurus v-6 it has 116 k on it ran good about 3 months ago i noticed the the coolant smelled "burnt" not like normal then about a week later i got a missfire in the 2 cylender so i replaced all the plugs and wires same thing so i changed the coil same thing i noticed about 4 days later the plugs had black on them smelled like gas/ oil now the engine shakes and it stalls often with some white smoke till it warms up it also "pouts" out of the muffler im thinking head gasket ne other ideas ?
also if your thinking head gasket how diffcult is it to do on this engine thanks
I'm thinking.....Head gasket or intake gasket, these motors can have issues with each. I'm assuming you havet he 3.8L? We have a '98 Windstar with the 3.8L with 115k miles and I got a price of $1200 to change the head gaskets about a year ago. I was loosing coolant, about two quarts a month, and had a couple of misfires on cylinder #4. Got spooked and wanted to trade it in on a Honda so I added some of NAPA's best "Bars Leak" to it. It fixed the leak and has been fine since (we kept it, trade in was too low).
Do a search on Google about this. (Be prepared and remember only people having problems post on the Internest) They were a lot of head gasket problems in the '95 & '96 vehicles, also some of them got head bolts that were 2mm too long so it never sealed like it should have.
It's not the 3.8L in there, more likely the 3.0L OHV (8th digit of VIN = "V" or "2").
From the sound of it, I would also suspect a head gasket problem.
What does the coolant look like? Is it thick and brown? Some of these Gen. III Taurus/Sables with the 3.0L "vulcan" engine can develop a cooling system issue known as "brown coolant" which wreaks havoc on headgaskets, freeze plugs, water pumps, and other cooling system components.
