I have a 65 F100 and the steering wheel seems to be "in my face". Is there anything that can be done to back it towards the dash, say 6 inches?
The truck is an automatic.
Steve, There is no known reason that you can't take 6" out of the middle of the column and shaft if that is what you want to do. You will have to move the dash cuff when you do it.
I have a tilt column, that had a bad shaft in it, I was able to get a shaft from a van and cut 6 1/2" out of it and installed it into the pickup column. I have not installed it yet, but have it waiting in the wings for the right day.
Yes that's right. When I put a column from a '76 into the '65, I had to modify it. It 's not that hard, but I tried to make it look stock and now the wheel is "in my face". Do I like it? It's a toss-up. The Nascar racer's move thier wheels up and "in their faces" because it's easier to steer after a long time period. It was discribed to me like this: try holding a 20 lb. weight at arms length for a minute. Now hold the same weight close to your chest, or "in your face". I think that because the truck I have used to have armstrong steering, they put the wheel up there for the same reason. I now have power steering, so it's either the stock look or more room. I think I'll leave it for now. It's not bad for long trips but I feel like a little old man driving it like that.
