Steering box adjustment

I was wondering if it is possible to adjust tightness in the steering by adjusting a set screw inside the steering box. I was told it was possible to do this, is this true. I s there really a bolt you can remove and on the inside a nut or screw to adjust this. This is on a 64 250 with stock manual steering. If there is i would love the input and how to do this.

Yes its true but most likely, the box needs rebuilt.
Lets do a test first to see what you need to do.
Raise the front end off the ground. Grab the drivers side wheel and wiggle it side to side. Watch the sector shaft arm to see if moves. If there is tto much slop in the front but the arm doesn't move, you need to rebuild the front end, not the steering box. If the wheel moves and the arm has a lot of free travel, yor box needs adjusting/rebuilding.

You must adjust the bearing preload before adjusting the sector shaft.
Make sure you gear is centerd and locate the slotted srew with a lock nut in it. Loosen the lock nut, turn the screw clockwise to tighten the gear mesh. Hold the screw and tighten the jamb nut.

If you need a more detailed guide, I would suggest purchasing a shop manual fron the ONLINE store from the Menu on the right.

Good luck.

Steering box adjustment

I had a problem with my truck wondering all over the road and though it was the seering box. I did som checking and found that the flexable coupling at the end of the steering shaft was split and had a lot of play in it thus the wondering.

Thanks for the advice I do much appreciate it. All I did know is that the guy who owned it before me had the front end completely rebuilt. I do know it only has about 25,000 on the new front, 8,000 of it I put on. If its the box does anyone know how i can get parts to rebuild it myself without having to send it to some place like mac's who wants about 525.00 to do it. Is there any kits you can buy for the do it yourselfer.

If there are, I haven't found them yet.

Gary - The 61-66 trucks do not have rag joint but rather a solid shaft from the steering wheel to the box.
