Do I ned to test the coolant and add additives. If I do what is the best way to get a coolant sample. Does my 02PSD come with a coolant filter if so where is it so I can change it. Thanx Mike
Welcome to FTE mjtpolice76.
I hear that you don't have to test the gold coolant for SCA's like you do the green stuff. I don't know how long it's supposed to last.
They do not come with coolant filters.
Lot's of guys put them on.
Gold coolant was the first generation of the coolants that didn't require the constant addition of SCA's. It does, however, need to be changed ocasionally. Someone with gold will pop in here shortly.
The trucks do not come stock with a coolant filter. Lots of us have added one, though.
Best way to get a sample is to use the wife's turkey baster and get it right out of the de-gas bottle (that plastic tank on the top of the engine with coolant in it).
Edit: Oooops! Kwik's too fast for this slow old bird.
Hey guys if i have a 01psd what additives do i need to add to my coolant, and how often do i. It looks like a grean coolant.thank you.didnt want to start a new thread for the same question
So, if mine has green now, and I decided it was time for a coolant change and flush, could I switch it to the gold? I like the idea of not having to test and no additives.

Switch to Shell Rotella ELC coolant. Good for 300,000 miles. Add an additive, drive it for another 300,000 miles.
It's deep red in color.
rotella is almost identical to dexcool in makeup. the gold coolant uses OAT which is way more advanced .
I have seen the damage that Dexcool can do. Where did you hear this about the Rotella?
I just put flushed and filled with Rotella because I heard a lot of good stuff about it.
yes, but the entire truck must be flushed several times.
Not sure that I want to flush it several times. Perhaps I'll just stick with the green stuff and keep my test strips and additive. I don't usually trust the quick change places, but Jiffy Lube has a pretty nifty device for changing the coolant. Any experience or warnings with that?
Also, how often is one supposed to check their coolant? I know quite a bit about the my truck, but the cooling system is one area where I'm lacking some knowledge.
