I hear everyone say "go ahead"... so I'll be the devils advocate here. I spent a long time on the phone with Sanderson tech folks and at the UPS office shipping headers back and forth till I found a "pair" that would work on my 460 with a volare clip... finally ditched the volare for the headers !!! The tech guys were great to work with and at least 4 times warned me not to run in a new engine with the headers on... burn it in on stock manifolds then switch to headers after the engine is tuned... they promised me if I used the headers to burn in it would discolor the tubes... due (I guess) to the problems you stated... timing errors and mixture problems.
Don't know about you... but after paying over 400 bucks for these shiny devils, I ain't taking the chance... I bought them for the looks anyway !!!
my 2 cents.. I believe I'd verify with Sanderson one more time if I had any questions.... they are the people you're gonna argue with if your headers are screwed up anyway
Joe, lots of advice and that's good. However, nobody has admitted to owning the Sandy header with the Sandy coating and running an untuned engine. Nobody knows the header better than Sandy. That said, I bought the Sandy ceramic coated and then did NOT follow the advice on the instruction sheet and ran a new engine on fire up and drove to the tune shop and they were very blue indeed. I then found that Sandy would not offer any help and I don't blame them. After talking to an actual racer/user I find that the coatings are not the same from one supplier to the next. I then sent to HTP coatings in SLC UT and they were recoated and look new. This is a true story, use your better judgement. Protect your investment. Without true data, it's just one more opinion/post.
